Has anyone on this subreddit ever catfished (used a false online dating profile)? Why did you start, and are you still at it?

Yeah. I was a minor and didn't want to give out my personal info. Besides, I was really insecure and enjoyed reinventing myself as someone cooler. I had a few fake backstories. Eventually, I got into RPG online and grew some self esteem for in person stuff.

Changed my character's sex in Runescape and became peoples gf for gold/items. I eventually ended up having a pimp that would buy me expensive items to doll me up and exploit the other players "buying gf". Pimp would ask for a cut each victim, but I eventually got a big payment of 1 bil by some player that ig didnt give af. I took the money and ran. Changed my sex back and bamboozled my ex pimp.

When i was in middle school i would play as a female on DCUO and catfished this one guy. It was unintentional at first but i never actually told him i was a guy, i just stopped playing the game.
