Questions about community rules

Hey everyone, I made this community because my wife loves SphynxCats and was sad there weren't more pictures of them on reddit. I've kept the rules extremely loose because you guys are great, and it's never been an issue, maybe a spam once every few months, nothing serious.

A user asked me today if selling cats was against the community rules - It's something I hadn't given thought to. I said yes (it's against the rules) because my thought is that people come here to see and share pictures of their cats, not see ads, but that discussion about it in the comments was fine with me.

If all of you as a community feel differently, please let me know in the comments!

Edit: thanks everyone for the feedback, I think for now, we’re going to say no to selling cats here because of the danger of scams, phishing, and general quality of the community concerns.

I wouldn’t mind seeing sphynx babies for sale. The only problem that I see is that also invites scammers to post pictures of kittens they do not own & conning people out of money & then running. This is the reason most groups will not let kitten sales be posted.

What if the breeder had to agree no money changes hands until the kitten is picked up?

I'd say your decision was pretty good. If someone were to start a post from a buyer pov asking for tips etc., that'd make sense to me too

If there was some way the mods could verify they’re not scams, I think it would be fine, but other than that maybe not. There could be a stickied thread about buying kittens, how to tell if they’re healthy, etc. and maybe it could be updated every once and a while with users who are selling so the posts don’t come up as posts

I agree with your decision to not allow sales in group. It opens the door to scams for sure.

I rather not see the selling of kitties. There is a nasty bit of rip offs going on right now. Pet flipping and blatent stealing of folks money. A neighbor tried to get a Maine Coon kitten from a "breeder". The breeder got sweet pics off the internet and offered to sell the kittens for a fair price for a pure breed. Every part of the sale was a con. Friend lost about a $1000 before realizing the con.

I believe that most of the reddit folks are good folks but that 5% can cause havoc in many peoples lives. If you want to put the ads here, I will definately stay here because of 95% great folks. I really want to thank you for taking your time to be the Moderator. Your gift of time and caring is very much appreciated. Blessing going your way to you and your family.

I would be fine with it!

I came here because I was interested in buying a Sphynx. The "breeders" I'm seeing are $1200 and up. I know my kitty wouldn't be cheap, and I want two of them so they're never lonely.
