The page was slowing to a crawl. Each keystroke when typing a message took about a second to be visible. Is this just Facebook's website getting huge and bloated?

yeah it happens when you view a tab with "Sponsored" in it

I've seen this happen in Facebook Messenger (the full-screen version), and also Signal (the desktop app). I always thought it was caused by React.

Also, check out how much JS Facebook loads. It's about 18 MB or so. I wouldn't blame the browser here.

Install uBlock, enable advanced control (they have a tutorial for this), and block a bunch of stuff that the page tries to load (which is not related to facebook page itself or media content), knowing Facebook it will load all kinds of bullshit.

Mine is at 863MB ... definitely a beefy amount of memory for a single tab. (Good thing I have 32GB of RAM in my machine. :)

When I used Facebook, it was largely useable because I used uMatrix to specify which resources could load and blocked a ton of things from loading.
