I'm so happy guys

After years of weekly migraines, multiple neurologists... my new gynecologist finally stated I needed to switch to an IUD instead of birth control. Migraine free for 4 months! It was such a simple change I'm so happy I want to cry!

Did you have hormonal migraine with aura by any chance? I'm still not clear on whether or not I should get an IUD even though I have asked my neurologist. I keep receiving an unclear message from him.

And also, congratulations!!!! I'm happy for you too.

I did! So my doctor suggested not taking the placebo pills to reduce hormone fluctuations, but it was still happening! It must have been the hormones :)

Oh wow. I think I need to try an IUD. Thanks for sharing!

Your neuro likely does not have the familiarity with the hormones involved. See a gynecologist. They work with these hormones every day so they will know which ones are most likely to cause you problems.

I will do that. Thank you!

My wife had lots of issues with birth control as well.
No migraines, but it gave her insane paranoia and hardcore OCD. The amount of potential nasty side-effects of birth control is absolutely insane.

It really is! I had been on them for a decade and just was used to all of the trash side effects..

I’m guessing it’s the non-hormonal iud (is it the copper one?)? I’m thinking of trying this when I go back to the UK. I had to come off the pill to go on topiramate but I was terrified of trying it before moving to Japan and something going wrong while I was living here and, well, it’s just not the kind of thing anyone wants to have to sort out while living abroad; that experiment can wait.

It's actually a really low hormone dose one called kyleena I think? I definitely notice slight differences in hormone fluctuation, like acne, but if that's the trade off from having migraines then I'll take it!

This gives me so much hope! I had migraines weekly since youth, with extreme debilitating ones every 2 or 3 weeks but ALWAYS on the Friday of my period. I've been on birth control constantly for the past 10 years (since I was 14) and only recently was it suggested by a friend that I try taking pills straight through without that gap for placebo pills to minimize migraines.. And it's helped a LOT. Over the past 3 months of doing this I've only had a few and they've all been from known triggers. I'm getting an IUD soon because my doctor is hoping it will decrease them even further. It's kind of frustrating that I dealt with them for my whole life and all of my pain, missed school and work, etc could have been minimized with such an easy change :/

SERIOUSLY! It's something so easy to change and so simple, I really hope it works for you too! So many lost days that could have been avoided 😭

I'm really happy for you! I tried an IUD for a month and my body rejected it. So much pain... Never really got to see if it worked.

Yeah the pain was pretty bad... took a few months for it to dissipate l. I'm sorry it didnt work for you!

If you were to not be on any type of birth control would you be migraine free?

1
SwampFox2OP•

No idea, I really don't want kids so I wasn't willing to try that lol

Which IUD do you have now?

Thank you. I’m starting to feel fed up all over again. I’m seeing my neurologist again in 5 days though.
