Air duct cleaning... scams? And what should proper air duct cleaning cost?

Husband and I used a coupon for $35 air duct cleaning. Seemed too good to be true, but didn’t see the harm in it. We recently purchased the home, and the previous owners used a lot of scentsy and glade plugin crap, so we’ve painted and had the carpets cleaned, and I’ve scrubbed a lot. This just seemed like one more thing I could do to help mitigate the old perfume smells.

The workers came yesterday, 20 minutes past the scheduled window of arrival, cleaned for about 20 minutes, and then the lead guy came to tell me the “bad news.” That I have construction debris in the furnace motor and ducts. He took a video (furnace is in the attic) and showed it to me of him opening the furnace and swiping a finger on a white powder substance, then he cut to the room the attic access is in so I could see it was really my house/furnace (I haven’t been up there, attics and crawl spaces are husband’s territory).

He then proceeds to tell me the cost for a “deep clean” is $900, but he can do it today for $700. Or I could sign up for a 10-year plan of maintenance and yearly duct cleaning for a special of $1200.

My alarm bells were going off, this guy was really dramatic and pushy. We declined the deep clean.

Now I’m worried about our ducts and furnace. We had the furnace serviced and inspected as part of our purchase negotiations and it was deemed fine and functioning. When I mentioned this to the duct cleaner, he said they’d not know about the construction debris because they don’t check for cleanliness.

I’m going to buy a scope to check out the other ducts and see if the debris is widespread. Part of me wonders if he planted the white dust in the furnace and nearby ducting. It could have been white flour for all I know. My husband is going to call the company that did the servicing to see what they actually did, to get a sense of if they’d have known there was construction dust up there.

Am I being overly paranoid? Is this a common scam? How do I go about finding a reputable company to clean my air ducts properly? From what I’ve researched after the fact, a good duct cleaning should take 3-5 hours. The house is 1700 sq ft. Is that accurate? Anyone have an idea on what this should actually cost?

Any insights or advice is much appreciated!

It's a total, 100% scam. How would he know some random dust is "construction dust"? Also, think about it. The dust is sitting there, it's not being circulated through your home. Why is that a problem? If you turn on the HVAC and you have clouds of dust then yeah, get them cleaned but a little dust inside your ducts? NOT A PROBLEM.

Also, that's your filters job.

coupons are a red flag to me for the construction/trades industry.

We had ours done a few years ago and they charged by the number of return/supply vents. The way you are describing the coupon company is the exact way the owner of the company we went trough described it- they always give the same story. He said imagine one offering a cleaning for that cheap, how do I pay my guys? How to I pay for equipment and still make money?

I feel like the reputable places are hard to find but you can start with asking your oil/gas company if they know of any places. That is how we found ours

If it's rigid metal ducts a cleaning is sometimes necessary and possible. If you have fiberglass hardboard or flex duct i wouldn't recommend since the cleanings canbeat up the duct and destroy it. I work for a good company and we charge about 150 a drop. "Vent"

How old is the house? How long have you lived there? Are you having any abnormal allergies? Did you recently do a remodel?

More than likely it's a massive waste of money. When you have your HVAC serviced have them take a look at the motor. You'll have dust debris in the ducts in a brand new house. It's pretty much unavoidable.

There's little to no evidence that if a home has been maintained that a duct cleaning provides any benefit. The only times you'd ever really need one is if there's mold, infestation, renovation (and a lot of dust got into the air), you notice things getting blown out of your registers when the HVAC kicks on, or someone is experiencing an unexplained illness. Have an HVAC professional do a maintenance chick on the HVAC system (usually $100-150 or so) and if they say that the motor seems to have excess dust in it, then there may be something wrong, but for the most part duct cleaning is wasting money... especially some annual cleaning deal.

Show them the door! I’ve been doing construction for 24 years and every HVAC guy I know laughs at these guys and their customers. They offer a duct cleaning with all kinds of health claims and they always find “problems” designed to scare the customers out of $1000. When it sounds convincing enough, you fall for it.

People imagine dust in their ducts being pumped into the house. Nobody ever asks how dust can accumulate in the duct if it’s blowing into the house. Save your money and forget about it.

I just had my air ducts cleaned in the home I just bought (1600 square foot ranch built in 1956). I think there were about 20 or so vents and it was around $600 for the total cleaning job. This was competitive with all the local duct cleaners.

We just had our whole 2,500 sq/ft house ducts cleaned. Think it was about $250 all said and done. There was so much shit in there. He even showed us where mice have been coming in the house from when it’s cold so we sealed it up proper.

Furnace cleaning is very common here , 90% + of homes have forced air gas furnaces with rigid metal ducts. The white dust might well be drywall dust, very common if anybody has ever done taping and sanding. It is very hard to sweep or even vacuum. Cleaning the ducts, furnace and plenum would run about $400 Cdn which is about $300 US and take about 2 hours with usually 2 guys. The equipment is a truck mounted, very powerful vacuum, and some air powered brushes that loosen the crud in the ducts so it can be sucked out. They drill some small holes in the plenum and ducts and install plastic caps, next time they are cleaned is then easier to do. They also install a cheap new filter.

If they show up with any kind of hand held equipment, send them home. Gotta be the big truck mounted vacuum .

It’s worth it if your heat exchanger, AC and evaporator cook are dirty enough. I don’t know the condition of yours. The prices you were quoted sound like a burn.

How would you get construction debris in your ducts in the ceiling? The only times I've seen stuff in there is if they are on the floor. As others have said if your house isn't dusty then there's no problem.

We paid $480 for a single story house. No one tried to sell us on it. I asked about it because we had found mouse droppings in the vents and the previous owners had dogs. I'm glad we did it. Lot's of dog hair, and they found a dead mouse!

But anyway that was me. This guy does not seem reputable. Trades don't typically offer time based discounts ($200 off if I do it today!).

Scam. Especially at that price.

Having our ~2600 sq ft house vents cleaned in the morning for $495. Quotes ranged up to $750 for us.

Someone on a random Facebook group explained it as these cheap duct cleanings are meant for people who have kept up with regular maintenance, and most people call never having done it before and that’s why the price increases. I don’t personally know but I do wonder if that’s what it might be in some cases. I’m sure these duct companies know this and sneakily advertise the price without the explanation.

Air duct cleanings can be a scam! Do your research, check out the reviews! Also make sure they have the proper equipment to properly clean your ducts and not some 500.00 vacuum, I’m a hvac service tech and my advice is to do your research and make sure you need a duct cleaning and also make sure you hire a company that has the right equipment! Google reviews!!
