Puppy going up the stairs
Hi guys!
Just need a bit of advice on how to train your puppy to go up the stairs "slowly". I have a 5 month old mini schnauzer and she used to have no problem going up the stairs. But lately she's been whining about going up. I'm assuming because the stairs is made from laminated wood and it a bit slippery. I'm buying anti-slip threads to put in the stairs to fix that problem but the issue that I have is that she "gallops" or she makes a running start and jumps over 1-2 stairs at a time. I always get a heart attack when i hear some sort of crash because she's too "excited" or fast going up the stairs. I'm trying to teach her to go up slowly so that she wouldn't injure myself but so far I have no luck.
Weirdly enough she has no problem going down the stairs, she does this very slow and carefully but when going up... it's like she's a bull. LOL
Any advise would be super welcomed.
*P.S. On another note: should i still be carrying her up the stairs? I'm not sure if there is a certain age where she should be going up on her own vs carrying her up.

No lie, I put my puppy in the middle of the stairs & went up/down then enticed him to come to me. I used treats for each step he was able to go down. Then alternated pats & treats when he got better.
Lots of whining. Lots of hesitation. But after ~30min, he finally did it on his own & got so confident that he started running up & down the stairs on his own :))... Then he started hesitating going down lol.
I wouldn’t say there’s a projected age. It really depends on your puppy’s size. Just as long as they can go up & down without smashing into their face if a leg skips the group.
So I just ignore the whining and try to entice her to go up step by step?
Yes.
