Just a general comment, dry wall is pretty forgiving, you can repair all sorts of goofs like they never happened. And you're going to be covering this up with pegboard anyway. And it's in the garage. Basically you can't possibly mess this up so bad that it won't look pretty great afterwards, I BELIEVE IN YOU.
Thanks!! Wow it didn't occur to me I could patch it, this is going to be muuch easier.
Get a stud finder. Or use dry wall anchors?
I got this thing but I really don't trust it. It's inconsistent, and gives both false positives and negatives http://imgur.com/gallery/w7WRZ68
Are you only using it on deepscan? Or maybe there’s just lots of other stuff behind that wall that’s triggering it.
I've tried all the modes. Could be other stuff I'll poke through and try to see.

The vertical seams of the drywall are the center of your studs. Roughly
I just want to say whoever did the tape/mud job on that drywall should be fired.
This makes sense thanks.
Get a semi strong magnet. Itll find the screw in the wall and stick to them. After that you go 16" to either side.
You can also go to an electrical outlet and find it that way since they're mounted to the stud. I dont recommend this if you're just blindly making holes though.

You're overthinking this a lot. Throw a nail through the drywall. Find the stud. Studs are gonna be every 16" either direction from the one you found.
Thanks I needed to hear this.
Not every house, nor every wall, in every house is 16", though.
16" most common, but sometimes 12, sometimes 18", and sometimes non-standard, or mostly 16" with some cheats.
However, great thing about pegboard, is that they are usually substantial enough to hide quite a few nail holes, so you can easily pound some nails to make sure you've found all the studs you need, then just cover them up with the pegboard!
One trick there is to find your first stud towards middle of where you want the pegboard, so that none of your exploratory holes are to left or right of where you finally put it.
Plus he already has stud nails marked out... just go in between your magnets and your good. Even if they're 16, 11, and 20 inches apart. Just cut your wood strips to length to accommodate.
Good advice, if I'm not sure I just get a thin wire nail and tap it through. If you don't hit any thing, try a half inch on either side. Quick repair with some spackling after, done.
