Sex workers are usually not selling a service, they're selling a reprieve from desperation and loneliness.
Uhhhh . . . p sure that’s the primary service my damn therapist offers XD
Ya, but you can't fuck your therapist.
Depends on the therapist tbh.
I need a new therapist
Sometimes I give myself the creeps Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
So if my therapist started fucking me would they no longer be providing a service?
Not with that attitude.
Man my ethics professor had us read a book by a therapist who said that they should be willing to go that far for their patients. My professor said when the book first came out, he and his colleagues were shocked. The rest of the book was pretty standard but...just ugh.
Consider the inverse, tho, which is literally sex as a service but divorced of a a lot of social notions. There are indeed people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities who want to and do have sex, with each other, and with people who do not share their disabilities, and they need help getting that accomplished. There's a few documentaries about it. The people who facilitate that are generally sex workers, bizarrely. This is therapeutic, it's absolutely a quality of life issue, for the differently-abled even more so, no one would dispute that right? A progressive society doesn't seem them as sex-hungry freaks, which they aren't, it sees them as normal human beings with the normal physical and emotional needs encompassed by sex, which they are. But our weirdly bifurcated society's brain kind of short circuits when we confront it practically. anyway, there's a case for bringing seemingly opposite notions closer to convergence
Idk man, the book in question was written by a man and something about the way he wrote just came off as that stereotypical attitude of a guy thinking his dick is God's gift to women.
I'm having trouble following your point though. You're talking about destigmatizing sex work which would allow for people, who are disabled to the extent that they're under constant care, to have sex with sex workers? I'm not getting how it relates to my post.
In a truly progressive society absent the economic pressures of capitalism, would there still be sex workers? Or would there be like, a volunteer organization of sex workers that service disabled people?
I mean, this is literally why a lot of dudes hire escorts. After regularly working with a john, the girls tend to end up doing more emotional work than physical.
Coal miners objectified themselves all day long
This headlamp makes me look so hot.
Reported for sexualizing miners.
See that one pisses me off so much because it's kind of correct, but it's not the correct word to use.
Coal miners are commodified. But mention Marxist analysis and suddenly 10 gajillion people are on my conscious
Is it possible to objectify someone in a non-sexual way? If not, wouldn’t the term ‘sexual objectification’ just be redundant?
Yes, slavery is the most obvious example of non-sexual objectification.
Could that be extended to include a coal miner in a coercive relationship with their employer?
Commodification?
Why does everything have to be a competition on the internet? I don’t see what anyone hopes to gain from this particular argument. It’s so asinine.
What, you don't want to hear what white, middle class teenage boys have to say about sex work?
Who else are we gonna ask? The sex workers themselves? Yeah right!
That’s exactly why it was perfect to be posted here.
But in regards to what they hope to gain, the people railing against sex workers are looking for ways to feel outraged and superior to others.
You're oversimplifying a complex situation to the point of adding nothing to the discussion.

Wouldn't be an online argument without equivalencies that give you a small headache when you try and think about them.

"And prostitute's aren't responsible for deaths and ruining lives."
I mean... one murdered a family member of mine. But that's not exactly the norm. It's led me to have a bias against them in general but they're not as bad as crack dealers.

How the fuck is providing a service for money “just rent-seeking”??? Rent-seeking does not mean “jobs I dislike”!!!
Because in their shit-addled minds women are sex dispensers that should get out free sex whenever a fine upstanding gentleman like themselves wants it. So by withholding sex from them (because they're a trash person) and only providing it upon payment it's rent-seeking.
Basically; it's their God given right to women's bodies.
OH shit that makes perfect sense and is GROSS.
that's incels baby!
I mean, what women SHOULD be legally free to deny such nice guys...right?

So the thing is, rent-seeking doesn’t mean “trying to pay your rent”. It’s a pretty specific term you hear mostly from socialists. It means to make money off of not doing any actual work or creation of value. If someone pays you money for a specific service you perform, that is definitionally not rent seeking. A classic version of rent-seeking in today’s world would be day-trading stocks. Day traders create no value for anyone, provide no goods or services, they simply seek to exploit the value public companies do create to rapidly make money by buying and selling stocks.
It has a specific meaning in economics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent-seeking

Rent Seeking is when you do something I don't like, and the more I don't like it, the more rent seeking it is.
