I hand cancelled mine because I liked the way it looked - when I went to the post office I offered to do it myself and the worker gave me the stamp and a bin to put the invites in when I was done. I think he appreciated that I didn't ask him to do it and it was kind of fun!
Just asked this yesterday with the same thought. I didn't worry about it. Seems like it's a hassle on postal workers who are already usually understaffed as is. I did give them to the person at the counter though instead of sticking them in a drop box because I didn't want to be the person potentially causing any damage.
Haha, I did the same thing - gave them to the person at the counter instead of putting them in the drop box - and the postal worker just gave me a weird look and said "you could have just put these in the box."
Same! He was like "you didn't have to wait in line" and I said "I know they're going to be manhandled but I didn't want to be responsible for it" lol
Also for some reason I just now got the notification for this even though you posted it like 4 hours ago???
Try calling your local post office on a Tuesday morning and see if they will let you do the stamping. If they say yes, go in at a time they won't be slammed.
The sorting machine is flat and shouldn't make marks on the envelope. The machine used to cancel stamps is the one you're trying to avoid.
I mean, I think they look really cool and old school. My local post office did them for free. It just made the initiation stay a bit nicer, and we had washi tape on the back which held on really well. I like it, not sure anyone else would notice though.
Depending on your location, you might get the run around at several post offices. Responses vary between workers at the same location.
Overall they get ran through a machine.
I did it for the looks and to minimize the number of times my all in one invites would go through a machine. I took them to the post office in my parents town in the middle of the week and there was no issue with it. I sent one to myself and it was in very good shape!
Based on the many posts I’ve seen about hand-cancelling invites, I’d say don’t bother. I often see people complaining about how they had them hand-cancelled initially, but then they wound up going through machines and were dinged up a bit or had processing marks on them. To my knowledge once the envelopes leave your local post office, there’s no controlling how they get processed at any office after that.
Honestly no one is going to care about the envelopes. Seriously.
This is such a big thing people need to realize. We spend so much time on calligraphy and yadda yadda yadda all for it to be appreciated for a few seconds. If you get a dinged up envelope nobody is gunna put the blame on you and think less of you
