The Gauntlet is amazing, please don't let it become obsolete because of bad drops

I absolutely love the Gauntlet. It's challenging and I think the mechanics are amazing but when comparing this to other PvM content, the shitty gp/hr could make this content obsolete very fast. I understand they don't want to make just another Vorkath or Zulrah but the difference is just too big.

The Gauntlet, even the non-corrupted version, is way harder than Vorkath. Vorkath:

  • Doesn't require offensive or defensive prayer switching, the Gauntlet does
  • Has a clear animation/projectile for when prayers are turned off, the Gauntlet does not
  • Requires no attack counting, the Gauntlet requires this for both your and the bosses attacks
  • Requires little to no movement, the Gauntlet requires extensive movement
  • Has very low and easily avoidable tick damage, while the Gauntlet's tick damage can literally kill you in 2 ticks because of small mistakes, voiding 10 minutes of work

On top of these things, if you die in the Gauntlet you loose +-10 minutes worth of time while dying to Vorkath means only 3-4 minutes lost (2 min kill + 1-2 min regearing). I know there is a money penalty for dying at Vorkath, but this is easily offset since kills are around or lower than 2 minutes and one kill entirely offsets the money penalty.

Yet, from what I've seen, drops at the Gauntlet average around 80-120k and I think the jmods said it the last Q&A that it was currently around 700-800k/hr. That's 4 times less than Vorkath, even though the Gauntlet is clearly the more challenging boss. This is not including the Blade of Saeldor but the droprate for this weapon seems ridiculously high and if the drops stay like this nobody will want to do this content for crystal shards, tanking the price of the weapon even further.

I'll be the last to say that the Gauntlet needs to spew out drops like Vorkath or Zulrah does and I like the idea of untradeable drops for a powerful weapon, but it's clear that there's room for rebalancing. This is some of my favorite content in the game and I'd hate for something new and original like this to become obsolete because the drops are just too bad.

They should make time based drops, If you finish with a fast time you should be rewarded with some decent loot. I'm over here doing sub 5s getting trout and rune arrows haha

Yes that could be a good start. It would reward skill directly with more profit, instead of something like Vorkath which can be mindlessly grinded.

Gotta do corrupt. If you can do sub 5 you have no reason to do regular.

Rush a level 3 bow, 10 food, no armor. Lvl 1 or 2 staff. And use this method where I can bow the whole fight

they tried to do a gwd loot incentive and failed miserably, little did they know the rare uniques had to be very useful...

now normies asking for supplies/gp loot eww

this post reads much more like an argument for vorkath to be nerfed that gauntlet to be buffed

gauntlet probably does need a slight buff, but nothing crazy no more than 25%

but the bigger issue is we've been spoiled by incredibly stupid drop tables at zulrah, vork, hydra etc and those all should be nerfed considerably

That’s not fair to the new players whatsoever. Current players have grinded billions upon billions of gp at these bosses. By lowering current methods of money making, it would lead to more people buying gold in order to keep up with new content. How could you even say 2-3m per hour is spoiled. PvM usually takes way more effort and concentration than skilling or other money makers. I don’t see why people should have to grind longer to reach a T bow or scythe or any other big ticket item they’ve been wanting when everybody else has used those methods previously.

For real. I just started farming Vorkath, like literally finished my 20th kill today. It's so nice to actually be able to do some rewarding content for once, which is an ability I earned by learning the mechanics, grinding out void and the stupid imbues, skilling to the point of being able to do ds2, paying for supplies/death tax, etc.

That's not to say the gauntlet shouldn't be more rewarding than it is now. It should be! But I hate this attitude of trying to pull up the ladder when vork and zulrah have been in the game for years now. Next thing you know barrows will be 'too profitable.'

Yeah it seems like an elitist attitude in all honesty. I’m guessing the people who want to nerf money makers are the same people who rwt gold and seek to raise gp prices.

I disagree, it's not about being elitist. It's about looking at the game top down and trying to fix issues with it. u/plknz is having fun now doing vorkath for their 20th kill today. But how are they going to feel after 500 kc? 1000 kc? 2000? 3000? Because that's basically what their entire game has been reduced to. Grind vorkath for money and use that money for buyables, gear, and rigour/augury.

It's more that, if those bosses didn't drop so many supplies/alchables to the point of drowning out other methods for making money then there would be more options and people wouldn't feel so bottle necked. I'm not an advocate of removing all their drops, I'm saying we need to look closely at their drop tables and balance them according to their unique drops/supply cost.

Zulrah drops the bis ranged weapon, bis melee helmet, and 2nd best staff upgrade in the game. Hydra drops bis melee gloves and bis melee weapon against dragons and CoX. Vorkath drops bis ranged anti-dragon shield and is the only way to get superior dragon bones. Their regular drops could be toned down quite a bit and they would still be very profitable since their unique drops would go up in price from people realizing there are other ways to make money.

Imagine how much bandos armour would be worth if you could farm him in an instance and make 3m / hr in alchables. The armour would just be an extra 3m drop every once in a while. Nerfing the alchable/supply drops of bosses such as zulrah, vorkath, hydra would not kill their gp/hr if done correctly and would open up more options by not making people feel forced to farm it because of it's consistency over other, more traditional, boss drop tables.

I agree with this completely. The jmods have clearly put themselves in a tough position by making the Vorkath and Zulrah tables so overpowered, but if they don't make changes it will hurt this content and likely any new content that they might release.

In the grand scheme of things, you are right all those things should be nerfed hard. But that's wishful thinking and we all know it, this deserves to be at least on par with zulrah/vork

Yea I did it a good number of times near release and it was fun, but I don't really see any reason to go back. There isn't any real variation to make it legit fun when done repetitively, and if I am going to do something really repetitive for money, there's no reason to do gauntlet.

This makes sense other than the part where you said that nobody wanting to do the gauntlet would make the unique drop from it go down in price. I think they were trying to make this like gwd where the high value unique makes it good in the long run but the blade just fuckin sucks.

1
TurnTMOP•

The reason I said that is that you need shards to charge the blade and since you only get about 6 shards per completion, and the drops being shit, there's just no reason to keep doing this content. And if nobody is wanting to get the required shards, then the blade will drop in price.

Of course this is is just a prediction, but personally I wouldn't even consider the blade unless it goes below 30 mil. If it's above that, I might aswell just use a whip/tentacle and save up for a rapier.

2
CarefulRisk•

You know that the gauntlet is the worst place to get shards right? Zalcano is way better

TurnTMOP•

The shards dropped at Zalcano are 1-3 per kill, and from what I've seen kills take about 2-3 minutes which would make it pretty much the same as, or only slightly better than the Gauntlet.
