Car registration advice

A colleague recently asked me about penalties they might have to pay for registering their car and obtaining their license after the 60 day grace period folks have when they move to New Hampshire. I thought about it and realized I don't have any idea. I tried finding the information via Google but fell short. This has me curious. What are the penalties for newcomers who did not register their car/transfer their license within that sixty day window?

I waited almost 6 months, and received no penalty.

They will process your friend’s registrations and license application like any other and tell them to have a nice day. DMV and town clerks have better things to do.

Honestly, though, I’ve never heard of a penalty either. Since you only need to be licensed and registered if you’re actually driving, I would imagine that it’s just another licensing/registration violation and could be ticketed as such if a cop pulled them over and had some way to prove they were not legally licensed or registered? I doubt that anything would happen retroactively.

Or a neighbor drops a dime.

For what, exactly? Parking vehicles with valid, out-of-state tags in their driveway? Are the police going to investigate their residency status, stake them out and wait for them to drive to satisfy some busybody?

I think the only practical possibility of this coming into play is in an election. A close race could find our friends on the right crying “voter fraud” and going in search of ballots to disqualify.

Yes, this is a thing. Seen it happen. So don't piss anybody off unnecessarily
