Can anyone who's owned the Audio-Technica M40X vouch for their durability for long-term use?

Discussion

I'm looking in to purchasing some but I've been finding threads where people talk about the joints on the swivel snapping and I'm a little worried.

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

Durable in my case. I've banged them around, thrown them in my backpack, generally manhandled them and my M40x is still good! Used them for 2-3 years on a regular basis.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like they're a mixed bag. I'm usually pretty careful with my headphones but enough people seem to be having issues I think I'm going to look into getting a different brand.

Thanks for the reply though :)

They're plenty durable if you are remotely considerate of your investment. The pads should deteriorate quicker than the joints unless you're a mad lad.

Quite the opposite, the M40X and M50X are made from cheap plastic and are not especially durable.

If you want cheap and durable, consider Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic.

cheap and durable, consider Sennheiser

I've had bad experiences with Sennheiser durability, they always seem to snap.

I've used several models throughout the years, the only one who came close to breaking was the HD555, and that was a known problem with that particular model. It still usable and did not snap, just developed a small crack.

HD202, 518, 558, 598, 6XX, 600, 800, all felt quite durable and never broke on me.

It depends, every brand will have some cheap models which may not be well built as their other models. Cannot generalise.

Mine recently snapped at the joint after 2 years while just taking them off my head. No warning sign either. I have some JB weld holding it together now https://imgur.com/a/9Cr1B8G

Thanks for the info. It's a real shame, this seems to be a common defect with them. I'll probably get another brand.

Well I dont think the whole brand is problematic, just the m40x. I also have an m50x and the joint is much more solid on these

m50x seems sturdier but I like the sound of m40x better

Would not consider them super durable especially in cosmetics compared to something like HD 598 etc..
Some of my friends say they lasted them 2years still looking and working like new, but also I've seen a lot of youtubers/images who has super worn M40X's like they look as if they were been used for 20years 24/7.

I was super gentle over its life. The hinge snapped after 1.5 years of use. The sound is perfect.
