I'm teaching myself how to paint. Here's a painting I did yesterday at Lands End, one of the most beautiful places in SF imo

the color of the rocks was really challenging - they're like a really subtle pale grey green red gray browny red green

Nice! May I ask how long you have been painting ? I wanted to teach myself to paint but never know where to start.

I literally started just this summer! I learned a bit about mixing paints from a design class at CCSF last spring, but most of this representational stuff I taught myself, following youtubers, tutorials and practicing and learning.CCSF's fall semester starts in like a few days and there's still time to sign up for classes. Tuition is pretty cheap and for SF residents it is even free. I'm considering going again for the fall, but I might travel instead and try to paint in other countries

Edit - this is painted using Gouache - here's more about the medium - https://www.reddit.com/r/learnart/comments/butqer/gouache_starter_pack/

For a two month beginner this is excellent.

Keep at it.

Go to your local library and see if they have "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards.

There are exercises in there that will help you with your drawing.

I think I read most of that the last time I was studying art.

You might want to look at it again.

You taught yourself that?

I was pretty focused on what I was doing, but you could have seen me sitting on the path painting on the way to lands end from sutro baths. A lot of people were peeping over my shoulder!

Looks pretty good. I don't know anything about painting, but why isn't there any line for the cables on the bridge?

1
mcscopeOP•

every painting is about choosing what details to capture and which to just suggest... this guy goes into that a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9M7hEvzK6c . The cables are just suggested here. If I had had more time out there I would have spent it on capturing more of the details of the rocks and foliage, but the sun set!

I dont know anything about painting but theres something about the style of this that really speaks to me. Like the surrealness i guess, yet it's a real place. Kinda like it's the idealized version of the place. I really love this, thanks for posting

Perfection! No joke, I fell joy looking at it comparable to what I feel looking at the bridge itself.
