Still needs title and improvement

Feedback Received!

I really would like to either lengthen this poem or write another poem that correlates to this one. It's not my best work and I'd love any kind of feedback that might trigger me to look at this in a completely different way or inspire a title. I'm terrible at naming my works. Thank you!

It’s all over now,

the fires have burned out,

now we walk through,

Annihilation.

You’ve married

Mr. Self-Destruct,

he’s the lie that

you believe,

Trent warned you

and you’re still

afraid to leave.

His loyalty,

His protection,

all those charms of his,

you’re addicted to

his sex,

because he knows

where you G-spot is.

You’ve got to burn your dead,

yes,

you’ve got to let it go,

but you can

control your burn,

child,

you’ve got to get control.

The only way is to say no.

It’s easier to fight

the living

than to fight

Ghosts,

strange truth is,

they’re more real

than most.

So I'm probably did something really faux pas here... but I LOVE the feel and the mood of this piece. I just found it really hard to read, especially out loud and I had a hard time following since I didn't catch the NIN reference either. so... I took your words and moved the stanzas around, edited just a little for rhythm, and added a NIN reference that's harder to miss, and one more word to get some alliteration to go with your punch line "annihilation". I might get skewered for jacking around that much with someone else's work, but I like the poem and you did ask for feedback so...

Title suggestion "Mirror talk"

It’s easier to fight the living

That loyalty, and protection,

Nine Inch nation,

Now comes the realization,

You’ve married Mr. Self-Destruct,

the lie that you believe,

Trent tried to warn you

and you’re so afraid to leave.

Annihilation.

Not sure if it's actually acceptable to post the rewrite here but I wanted to share it...

omg I'm actually so excited that you did this because I love the beginning made as the ending a lot!!! If you don't mind, I will probably keep that. I thought about it a lot yesterday and it seems clear here that the Trent/NIN reference is confusing the piece too much so I'm probably going to scrap it completely. Mirror talk is a good suggestion, I think it would help to make things more clear that this is about a relationship between someone and themselves and not a romantic piece. I'm not sure if I will use it exactly but I'm definitely going to play around with it! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my work and do this! It really helps so much to get out of my own head and think about things I wouldn't have and see what's really working and what's not.

I think sometimes it can help to treat the editing process a bit like a word game... While by no means always true, most of the time a piece will get better if you try and take a look with a "technical" eye and play a bit of poetry Tetris (Poetris?!) for an hour or two after you first feel happy with it/consider it finished from an emotional and narrative standpoint.

Also it's possibly a given but even if you're writing only for page (not that yours seems that way, it has a conversational style to suit spoken word too), sometimes reading a poem out loud can help you find serendipitous rhythms/rhyme schemes, natural breaks, where things could be moved for emphasis etc.

That said, it's because you shared a great poem to start with that u/WhackedDestiny was able to run with the idea in the edit. The concept and ambience were all there and the form is absolutely fine as is, just that it shows a little bit of editing can go a long way!

If you end up with a later version of this or a counterpart piece, I look forward to seeing it :)

Poetris! I like that! I play that game a lot. I definitely need to read more of my work out loud. I work in an office with other people so most of the time that's not an option until I get home, so I should do a little homework... Thank you so much for your kind words, it means a lot!

I feel like him being “Mr Self-Destruct” is interesting, but it doesn’t seem to come up again. When you say it that way it makes me think that these problems she is having are originating from his own problems. Maybe you could add something about how his problems are likely to still be there and will come up again. Maybe she needs to burn her dead in order to save the living.

ARagingFireOP•

The Mr. Self-Destruct is actually from a Nine Inch Nails song of the same name, and Trent is a reference to their lead singer Trent Reznor. I referenced the song because it's so honest about what self destruction really is and so by marrying the character it would be this acceptance that would make them one in the same. On the other hand I was trying to explain why we still choose the self destructive path and my take was that we keep to our habits (even if they aren't good ones) because we get comfortable with them and we gain pleasure from them. The second half when I say you have to burn your dead is definitely what you are saying, you have to burn the dead to save the living, which is herself, and to do that she has put herself in uncomfortable situations while confronting things like her own beliefs which were made up in her head and probably not the truth. Thank you for your feedback! I really appreciate it!

The first stanza ends pretty abruptly, the word annihilation has a ton of emphasis on it due to the lack of rhyme. After that you seem to adapt to some kind of simple rhyme scheme. The second stanza had an off beat word in the 3rd line "that". It really interrupted the feeling I was getting from the poem. After that the rhyme worked pretty well for the rest of the poem. I can tell the poem has a powerful message behind it but in order to really make it shine the rhythm and the rhyme schemes have to be perfect so that the reader isn't taken out of the world you are portraying. Good job though

2
ARagingFireOP•

Thank you! I was definitely going for lots of emphasis on the word but I am torn between making it work like the rest of the poem or not, I'm also torn between fitting the whole poem into the rhyme rhythm box, however, I agree that if I at least chose one or the other it would be more effective... and you are totally right about the word that! I can just delete it, will flow a lot better. Thank you again for taking the time to read my work.

I'm kind of confused as to what this poem is about. There's not a solid narrative I'm detecting, it sounds more like a jealous ex lover ranting. He's Mr. Self destruct, but offers loyalty and protection? She's addicted to his sex? What does that have to do with you walking through annihilation? Does the subject switch from the ex lover to the narrator? Because the lines 'youve got to burn your dead/let it go/take control' sound like the narrator talking to himself about the ex lover. Is 'you' always referring to the ex lover? If so, what does she have to let go? What ghosts does she have?

2
ARagingFireOP•

This is definitely one of my flaws as a poem writer... I think I'm good with setting a mood/vibe but when it comes to a narrative I can get too convoluted. Adding the lead singers name from NIN I think it was is throwing most people off and I will probably cut it out. Thank you for your feedback!

Please don't discredit your work! Its good - I like the whole concept and it caused me to reflect back on my past relationships.

However, in my opinion the last two stanzas are weak. They are well written, but it feels as if they were just tacked on. I think they would work better in a poem about mourning - or was this a poem about mourning? I couldnt tell

1
ARagingFireOP•

Thank you for reading! I try not to discredit but I am very critical of my own work. In a weird way I think it is about mourning, because it's about giving up your comfort zone and that's really terrifying and uncomfortable, at least for me...

2

I like it. My only criticism is that I don't know who trent is, and that line makes me wonder in a direction not conducive to the narrative being told. I'd suggest changing it to something less personal like "tried to warn you".

1
ARagingFireOP•

Thank you! Yes, I'm probably going to scrap the name... doesn't work.

1
kryptonitingale•

I agree with others that the last stanza would have more impact if it were at the end.

One suggestion I have that I have to do with myself sometimes, is to read your poem a few times and take out any words that don't need to be there. For example, I think you could say you're addicted to the sex he gives you while taking out the reason why. Sometimes saying less is more impactful.

1
Mundane_contents•

I agree with another comment, not sure who trent is? but I love the vibe you're going for (or what I understand you're going for at least. scorn love? unrequited?). There's clear passion involved and the words convery it very effectively :)

1
ARagingFireOP•

Thank you so much! I am definitely going to get rid of the Trent reference. At the end of the day I am really happy that people seem to be feeling the emotions in this piece.

2

Much bettah! I like the “stained mirror” title too! Great work!
