Some Mornings

Feedback Received!

Sometimes there’s a morning when the sun just hits

you in the face, and all the star-touched soft-sigh moments from last night seem to

crystalize as rough, scrape your tongue hardness

I don’t mean hungover, when tarry tired eyes can be

a promise, an oath, that wild bodies rode waves of sound and

unreproached joy just hours before

I mean the mornings where you had just hit that sweet REM when

a faint bark and the gentlest eyes let you know it’s time to walk instead

the mornings where the bakery with iced coffee that makes you feel like

maybe you’re really living that city life they show in the movies

is closed, and not closed

for renovations, just for the sweet short window

between your sleep and work

the mornings where the eggs you made the night before have caked

to the pan like armor

like the strongest goddamned metal known to man

the mornings where all the scattered pieces of the day fail

to coalesce, and all there is to do is sigh

and push ahead

I loved this a lot!
I felt a real juxtaposition between happy mornings/mornings after a good night and "Some Mornings"

The alliteration in "star-touched soft-sigh moments from last night seem" and "wild bodies rode waves" evoke a sort of soft feeling, it was satisfying to read.

When you're describing "Some Mornings", specifically around when you're describing the mornings with the closed bakery, I really felt the exasperation and the slight sadness of giving in to the various unfortunate events of the day. Like "of course the bakery is closed when I want my coffee." or "the eggs are sticky to the pan, great."
but there's nothing we can do, we really do just muscle through.

Can't wait to read more of your work, you have a new fan!

I think the title embodies the spirit of the poem.

I like the colloquialism: "sweet REM" and "goddamned".

I interpret the use of the "you" subject as an intentional attempt to connect with the audience.

"star-touched soft-sigh moments from last night seem to

crystalize as rough, scrape your tongue hardness"

I like the stimulation to the senses: the image of something crystallizing; the feeling of something scraping the tongue; the smell of a bakery; the taste of iced coffee.

My favorite line:

"the mornings where all the scattered pieces of the day fail

to coalesce"
