damn, didn't even catch that. i kind of like that they show different forms of grief like that though? It's something (hopefully) only adults would catch too, very subtle.

This isn't incidental. The movie is very clear about her abuse and her sense of grief. Even her character design, with the suggestion of running mascara. It doesn't go explicit, because it's still aimed at twelve-year-olds, but... frankly, holy shit.
