Virtual 7.1 on Sound Blaster X-Fi HD not working

I've just got myself the X-Fi HD for one and the only reason - SBX Pro Studio. Especially it's virtual surround. The problem is, that it doesn't work the way I've expected. It upmixes 2.0, rather than downmixing 7.1. In Windows audio settings I can't set the output to 7.1, I have only the "Stereo" option.

Do I have some issues with my Windows 10 1903, or this particular sound card doesn't support virtual 7.1 over headphones?

Does it sound like its giving surround in your games though?

No. I can't differentiate what's in front of me, and what's behind me. The only surround/3D working thing is ALchemy/EAX. Tested with Postal 2 and it sounds amazing.

Show me the SBX tab of your creative entertainment app?

also, make sure that in sound settings of windows enhancements are enabled for your headphone out.

I can definitely hear the SBX processing, but it sounds like 2.0 only.

Try putting it to 50%, see if you notice any changes. Sadly my X-Fi HD broke so I can't check for you if it shows up as 7.1 in windows sound settings or not- but i'm pretty sure it didn't. Are you running the latest drivers?

The X-Fi USB HD (as I know the device, as I have one) does not support virtualization of surround speakers. It's a 2ch device, and does not support native 44.1K or multiples thereof. (DirectSound will resample it if source is)

I just upgraded to a Creative G6 to get the virtualization features, and it also happens to be a better sounding DAC and amp. On the HD, the headphone port will only output 1A, whereas the line-out will do standard RCA out which is 2A. So yes, the line-out has twice the juice.

Return the HD and get the G6.

It’s twice the price though..

You can also look at a G5, which should be cheaper. I got my G6 for $129.99 on Amazon.

?? Yes it does. I've had this USB sound card/dac for the longest time and it had SBX HRTF.
