Chromecast built into new Philips TV

Hi, I just got a new Philips Android TV with built in Chromecast.

The manual is useless and just tells you how to put the stand on it and how to put batteries in the remote.

The prob I'm having is that I have no idea how to access/use Chromecast.

I can "cast" youtube to the TV, but any non-Chromecast/non-Android TV smart TV can do that. I'm wanting to talk to Google Home and ask it to show photos on the TV etc, like you can with Chromecast. But Google Home app and my Google home devices and phones say they cannot see a device to cast to.

Philips haven't responded to emails and tweets and Google have tried to help but after a couple of hours they had to give up and say Philips will need to help.

Any help/advice appreciated

EDIT: Ok, after a full night of messing around, I've noticed it occasionally works. My Nest Hub now has it listed and I've changed it's name. I got it to show photos by asking the Hub, the TV auto mutes when I'm talking to the Hub and un-mutes when I'm done. The problem now is that it's intermittent. Sometimes the Home App says it's not connected. If I speak to the Hub and ask it to do something with the TV, it will say it's doing it but then nothing happens and at the same time the TV never un-mutes itself. Also, the Wake with Chromecast is still greyed out.

I think that the cast option included in your TV isn't what you're looking for

I had the same issue with a LG TV, I can cast YouTube or Netflix, and Spotify, because there are apps included, but it doesn't work the way Chromecast does, so I can't listen to Google Play Music for example In the end I just bought a Chromecast, it'll always be my first choice over apps

Edit: spelling

This says "Chromecast" though. I know normal smart TV can cast if it has the app, but as this is specifically Chromecast it should be able.

I just cannot find any settings on the TV to get into Chromecast, what it's name is etc

Many smart TVs have the manual accessible from the main menu, see if you can find it around

What's your TV model?

Thanks, I'll have a look when I get home 50PUS7803/12

I looked a bit around and while I couldn't find anything for 50PUS7803, I found a manual about 75PUS7803, which I guess is the same TV but bigger

The manual doesn't talk about any setting because it should already be activated by default:

"What You Need

If an app on your mobile device has Google Cast, you can cast your app on this TV. On the mobile app, look for the Google Cast icon. You can use your mobile device to control what's on TV. Google Cast works on Android and iOS. Your mobile device must be connected to the same Wi-Fi home network as your TV.

Apps with Google Cast

New Google Cast apps come available every day. You can already try it with YouTube, Chrome, Netflix, Photowall … or Big Web Quiz for Chromecast. See also google.com/cast Some Google Play products and features aren't available in all countries. Find more information on support.google.com/androidtv"

My Vizio TV has Chromecast 'built in', but on the inputs screen, it's called SMARTCast and is generally about as functional as the Chromecast I have in my other TV.

Dumb question, but have you looked through the TV menu to see if the chromecast feature needs to be enabled?

Yeah, there was nothing there.

Did you actually add the TV to Google Home app? You can cast to a TV without adding to it to G Home, but if you don't add it to GH you can't control it with the smart speaker.

Please clarify.

I couldn't, it kept saying it couldn't be found. This was the issue, it was acting like it didn't even have Chromecast.

I've updated my post as it's now working but intermittently.

I wonder if the TV just has a built in cast receiver rather than Chromecast. My sharp TV has but we still use a CC tbh, just works so well.

I have the same sort of TV.. but I don’t have a google home. You can however use the voice on the remote control. If you press the circle button on the remote, it should open up google assistant on the TV itself, and you can “talk” to the remote.

I use a Harmony Hub to control the TV and the point of Chromecast is that I can use any of my Google Assistant devices

I have a Philips TV as well. It has Android TV so the apps can run on that, but in addition, it has a built-in Chromecast. In the Google Home app, you need to configure the TV's Chromecast so you can use it in the same way you would normally use a Chromecast. If everything is on the same google account, using the Google Assistant in the remote should allow you to use it as you mention (I think). One thing that can get confusing is there will be two ways to cast to youtube. The built in youtube app in android tv will have casting capabilities but the chromecast can also be used for youtube casting. On my phone I see two options to cast to the tv.
I think you just need to go through the Google Home app and try to add the tv to the Home or Room or whatever. Also check to see if you have the latest android version on the tv already. I had to update mine when I just got it.

The Home app couldn't find it and there's nothing on the TV to configure for Chromecast.

I've updated my post as it's now working but intermittently.

Chromecast does not have the ability to talk to your devices with commands like a Google Home device. Chrome cast is specifically built for casting video (or screen mirroring) from your phone or other devices to your TV.

End of features.

Not at all true. I ask my Google Home to play stuff on my Chromecast all the time.

Exactly, you ask your Google Home which has the Google assistant built in. The Chromecast is not a Google assistant, it can be commanded using Google assistant

I'm wanting to talk to Google Home and ask it to show photos on the TV etc, like you can with Chromecast.

But that's exactly what OP said?

Google Play Music works great on all my Chromecasts on my TV and even my Vizio TV that has Chromecast 'built in', though it calls it 'SMARTcast' on the inputs selection screen.

I know. I was talking to the Hub. And that's not the end of features. You can ask the Hub to display your own photos on the TV, to play music and more. I've updated my post as it's now working but intermittently.

Probably the google home app recognizes that the TV is not an actual chromecast, and is not offering this feature as a result. I suspect the only way to get voice activation from your google home to the TV is by buying an official chromecast device, and not using the one built in to your TV.
