Top 3 veg/bottom 3 veg

For the purposes of this quiz veg=any edible plant.

My votes:

Top 3:

Cabbage (fermented, stewed, fried with spices, fried with noodles, plain old boiled, perfect accompaniment to virtually any meal)

Cucumber (pickled, fermented, fresh, a beautiful juxtaposition when mixed amongst hotter or heavier dishes, slip a slice in to a jug of water and watch the water improve)

Aubergine (food. of. the. gods.)

Bottom 3:

Kale (too tough and not enough flavour to be worth the effort)

Spinach (bland when raw, horrible combination of soggy and stringy when cooked)

Lettuce (literally tastes of absolutely nothing)

Now you.

I don't think I've ever actually had a vegetable I dislike, other than eggplant.

I have given you an upvote purely as a participation point. I do not associate with anti-aubergists. Fried aubergine is the food of the gods. Also admirable: grilled aubergine, roasted aubergine, smoked aubergine.

I am genuinely baffled by the apparent prevelance of aubergine hate.

2

It's probably the only veg I genuinely dislike because at least horseradish I can avoid easily, for some reason a surprising number of people seem to like eggplant (parm specifically).

Parmigiana isn't that popular over here so I've only tried it once, but I wasn't that impressed. I think it's an aubergine dish for people who don't like aubergine. Beguni, begun bhorta, or even deep fried and diced in a simple pasta sauce is where it's really at.

A very original list, I respect it. Olives in the lowest circle though? Would you make any distinction between the varieties? I can understand including the crimes against the culinary arts which are typically preserved very poorly and labeled (suspiciously) only as 'black olives', but a good, firm but juicy, kalamata is surely irresistible?

All olives are yuk-yuk for me. I find them oily and salty at the same time. Even the fresh ones. Just never developed a liking or taste for them. Before going vegan, I didn't eat neither broccoli nor avocado. While I enjoy a little bit of avocado, I also find it too buttery. Broccoli, however, 2lbs in one sitting, raw, no problem. Extreme WFVegan here :)

Top 3:
Potato, spaghetti squash, mushrooms.

Bottom 3:
Iceberg lettuce (because it offers nothing but crunch), any other squash but spaghetti, radishes.

If you like eggplants, which I’m assuming you do based on your comments haha, my bf made an eggplant pasta with various other veggies and red sauce BUT ADDED A LITTLE CINNAMON AND IT WAS BOMB AF PSA.

Iceberg lettuce (because it offers nothing but crunch

EXACTLY

Also thanks for the tip, never would have occurred to me. I will genuinely try it.

If I’m out with friends or family at a restaurant I didn’t pick and the only vegan menu option is a shitty salad with iceberg lettuce I will roll my eyes into the next dimension, I still haven’t found them from last time.

I gave him shit for it when he was about to add the cinnamon and I was so, so wrong to do that.

For the purposes of this quiz, tomatoes count as veg

1
bunappletreatvegan•

Top:

  • kale--seriously, have you ever had any cooked in a soup?
  • mushrooms of all varieties
  • parsnips

Bottom:

  • lettuce
  • okra
  • still lettuce
2
ElmoReservedOP•

I don't think I've had kale in a soup. I'm open to persuasion. How would you soup it?

1
bunappletreatvegan•

Finely diced, thrown in toward the end. I love it in Bon Appetit's pasta e fagioli (leave out the ham hock and parm rind, I like to add some mushrooms or something for the umami). It's also really great added to a vegetable-stock and tomato-based lentil soup--lentils, crushed tomatoes, veg stock, mirepoix, kale, cumin, oregano, garlic. Throw it in the instant pot for 15 minutes. You can cook in the kale when you do the pressure cook or just turn an instant pot on sautee and let it cook down at the end.

Diced small matters though or you end up with huge chunks of kale that aren't great to chew.

I accept your challenge and will try cooking this within the next few days. Thanks!

I love eggplant so I’m surprised to see so many people dislike it lol. I usually will do a stir-fry with bok-choy and brocolini then top it with a peanut sauce.

I don’t like tomatoes and usually force myself to eat them. I’m not a fan of the texture unfortunately.
