RX 480 have a lot of stuttering, is there anyway to fix this?

Troubleshooting

My RX 480 stutters a lot in both games and benchmarks, it's basically unusable in games now because it makes me feel sick. It stutters slightly with v-sync on, severely without, even when all settings are set to low. Sometimes it crash when running full load for too long like in an intensive game like GTA 5 or any benchmark I've tried (Timespy, Unigine Valley, furmark). GPU temp never exceed 70c, running at stock clock.

I wiped the drivers on my computer using DDU and reinstalled fresh drivers, this didn't work. I had also physically taken the GPU out and put it into a fresh build from a friend, installed new drivers and the problem still persisted.

Is it a lost on the GPU now or is there anyways I can salvage this?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated

If it's a reference model, up the power limit a bit. If I recall, +20-30% did wonders for the card. No idea what options are presented in the current drivers, but there used to be the power efficiency mode too, make sure that isn't enabled either. I also had stutter with a few games when chill was enabled, so might be worth turning that off too. Edit: just saw that it's crashing on you... If there was an undervolt applied, go back to stock voltage. Past that, idk. Maybe it's busted :/

When upping the power limit the GPU will instantly crash when it reach 100% usage. I have tried increasing power limit and core voltage which didn't work. I have also tried decreasing power limit and core voltage which increase the length of time the GPU can run but it stutters even worse.

Edit: the problem happens at all voltage (undervolt, stock and overvolt). It's driving me nuts trying to diagnose this, it's such a weird failure.

What CPU are you using? It's possible you're bottlenecking somewhere.

Also what is your GPU usage when gaming? It's possible the 480 could be the bottleneck.

My pc has an i5 4570k, 16gb ddr3, GPU usage in games and benchmark ping pong between 10% and 100% if at full load before it crash (~40s - 1m from beginning till crash).

My friend pc that I used to test it on was a ryzen 2600, 16gb ddr4, same behavior as above.

Okay so you know it's likely not a cpu bottleneck. u/tbarela mentioned making sure it's not on some power saving mode and upping the power limits can help, that would be my next step as well.

I've tried that too, it's not on power saving mode and I've also tried to up the power limit. This cause the crash to happen more frequently and stutters still persist. In all cases, temperature was below 70c, monitored with msi afterburner.

considering the same happened on another entirely different PC I would probably have given up. Seems a busted GPU.

Wha model is it? does it have a secondary bios? maybe try to reflash de bios if yes, after testing the secodnary one.

Also, maybe its not really a core problem, but the the vram degraded. I think you can try to undercklock the ram and even try the 2 different timing sets for them (i believe there is such an option in radeon wattmann, but it could be specifict to vega)

I really don't think it's ram, I've also tried underclocking the ram to 1800 then 1600 MHz. This did not solve the issue. My card is a msi gaming X model, no dual bios unfortunately. Time to save up and buy a replacement I guess.

sadly I think its the better solution. After you've replaced it you can try to do some more drastic stuff to try to ressucitate it... like the oven method, bios reflash...

No, I'm very suspicious that your motherboards the issue not that GPU

I have also tried it with another board, a brand new b450 + 2600 a friend just built days before. Same issues, I think the GPU is borked at this point.
