I need help with text box sizing

I am new to Inkscape but have a strong background in Vectorworks cad program, which I get is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison but that might be why I'm having such an issue....

I am trying to come up with a better work flow for making a large quantity of stickers to label cables. I have watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG7IDvkrmVw and I am hopeful I can improve on the current process which relies on a lot of duplicate data entry. My current issue is I can't figure out how to force a text box to be a certain size. I want to have a sticker 1" high by 3" wide with a text box centered on it that will not be any bigger than .75" high and 1" wide. Any tips?

Interesting one. I assume you mean the blue boundary box when you go to edit text?

I've never had a need to do this but immediately what comes to mind would be:

create a box shape to the size you want > turn on snapping > drag a text box from one corner of the box shape to the other > remove box shape.

You can "prep" the text box and never resize it.

That's how I'd approach this one personally but if someone has a better way, I'm sure they'll pipe up.

Thanks, but I think I wasn't clear in my reasoning, the labels will have between 1 and 20 characters on them. I am hoping for a way to have Inkscape automatically size the text to never be more than .75" X 1" . I gave your suggestion a go and it made the box the right size but any text beyond what would fit was not shown.
