PSA: if you're experiencing a phantom torque and you can't find answers, I found one...
So, I've been searching the web for a solution to my phantom torque problem. It seems like many others have had a problem with this and have found no solution: when your craft kinda spins and drifts around on its own. I thought for sure it was some kind of bug.
No, it's not trim. Alt-x doesn't fix it. No, it's not offset thrust or drag. This happens in orbit with no engines activated. No, it's not controller dead zone. I unplugged the controller.
Well, tonight I had enough and stripped my install back to stock and was shocked that it kept happening. Here's the answer: it's the controller. Doesn't seem right when you consider that I UNPLUGGED IT. But I promise you it was the controller. After unplugging did not work, I went into the settings and cleared the controller axis from their assignments. That fixed it. I'm using a PS4 controller with the default/generic Windows 10 drivers for a "wireless controller".

In PC KSP, you can define a "dead zone" threshold where the game doesn't read the joystick info.
Another case can be when you try to rotate manually but are locked to an axis. Don't touch anything and look at the SAS icon : if you see arrows then something is moving your ship, either an axis lock or a key still pressed.
Yeah. I was assuming it couldn't have been a controller input because unplugging didn't help and I assumed the default dead zone would be enough for a fairly new PS4 controller that works fine in every other game.
