High Rank Monsters: Can you react to every incoming attack?
TL;DR Can you react to all incoming attacks, or are some too fast to react to?
I beat the Main Quest recently and I've started fighting all the optional High Rank monsters. I've also started going on Multiplayer hunts, after playing most of the game solo. However, I felt like I was spending too much time running from the monsters and using healing items when I should be in the monster's face, helping my team do damage.
I looked for advice online, and saw that people suggested going back to Solo mode to learn every monster's attack pattern. Since I needed Black Diablos' horns for several pieces of equipment, I decided to switch to Hammer and start with her.
I spent a few hours today fighting her and trying to predict all her attacks, but I still got hit a lot. Because she attacks so fast, I was often unaware of how I got hit, so I started recording all my fights and going through the footage afterwards. I went frame-by-frame every time I got hit to see when I made a mistake.
I was able to notice some telegraphs that I didn't notice while playing in real time. I also found which zones are relatively safe to hang out in (under her belly, between her feet and forward a little) and which are dangerous (in front of her feet), but I'm still having trouble. Some of her attacks are very fast, and I can't react quick enough to them. And obviously there are much faster monsters than Black Diablos.
So I think I'm looking at this the wrong way.
Can you react to every attack from every monster? Or are some too quick to react to?
I've looked up speedruns and no-hit runs on YouTube and Twitch, and it seems like the meta revolves around high-damage equipment that staggers the monster and kills it quickly. People also seem to focus more on positioning (staying in places they know to be safe) and being proactive so that they don't have to dodge/block every attack.
Is that the strategy? Should you focus on positioning, and staggering the monster? Or can you react to every attack with enough practice, dodging and blocking as needed?

Most HR monsters are actually pretty slow compared to the hyper aggressive monsters you find at endgame or MR. I'd say most veterans can predict and avoid 99% of HR attacks with roars or attacks like AT Nergigante instant slams being the hardest to predict or avoid. Like, you will probably never get hit by HR Great Jagras or Pukei Pukei if you really tried and didn't get cocky and impatient.
Yes, the goal isn't to avoid attacks but to not be where they are to begin with. This lets you attack more often. Some monsters are too fast for you to try to "take turns" dodging and attacking with. Their next attack will come out by the time you're done dodging. You need to be proactive and well positioned.
Thank you, this answers my question. I have been trying to "take turns" dodging and attacking, which seems like the wrong approach. I'll focus on trying to learn the proper positioning for each monster instead
