(Ex) challenger Camille AMA

Hey guys, I’m currently on a 6 hour ride back from a cousins wedding and am passing the time by doing whatever I can possible so I figured I could do an AMA here or on summoner school.

As for who I am, my name is Mitchell”Cavele”deJong, I’m a challenger top laner who’s played in amateur (not academy) for 3+ years back when I first turned 16 (Am now 20). I’ve played at 3 LAN events, namely the Montreal dreamhack event in 2017, one in Indianapolis and one in Chicago. (Though I believe at the time I was under a different ign so it might not show on my leaguepedia) I’m an old irelia main gone Camille main who started in season 3 maiming shaco Leblanc and wukong.

Feel free to ask anything from league to lane to stream or irl.

What do you consider hard matchups as Camille in the top lane? And what are lanes that you just win or hard stomp?

11
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

I’ll do the match ups sorted by elo and explain some of the weird choices, for clarification the high elo champs are the ones I believe are the hardest when played optimally but the low elo ones are assuming your a Camille player of equal rank as the other champ.

Hardest low elo: Jax, garen, Kayle, renekton Easiest low elo: Kayle, gangplank yasuo qiyana

Kayle; she will lose this lane extremely hard (0-3 down 50cs) but because it’s low elo the game will likely drag on to 30 or 40 minutes and eventually she will hit level 16 with 3-4 items and become really hard to handle regardless of her lane, so she’s in both easy and hard.

Garen - really simplistic kit that if you aren’t well versed with buffering abilities before his silence hits you (buffering q1/2 so it doesn’t wear off before you can cast it or buffering e so you can dodge most of the spin damage) or aren’t comfortable with the match up he can stat check you fairly easily. As well if you ever become villain you will probably die before the silence wears off. Also if he ever starts to lose lane he can stonewall the lane really hard and not let you get any advantages.

Gangplank/yas/qiyana - these champs are all really hard to play well and are super fragile so in the case you ever all in them they will explode. They have a lot of tools in their kit to mitigate your all ins but at low ranks it’s often not used well (or at all).

Mid elo (plat+)

Hardest: fiora jax renekton poppy Easiest: Kayle, yas, qiyana, most tanks

Poppy: I put her higher in mid tier elo because around this rank people can play poppy to an acceptable level but Camille is a lot harder to pilot. Even if you manage to beat her in lane (which is hard because she stonewalls lane similar to garen) she shuts you down in teamfights really well and side lanes she has pretty reasonable damage while also being crazy beefy.

Tanks: they are at a point where most of these tank players won’t itemize very well, (bamis bramble with timewarp and biscuits) and so you can likely win lane one way or another while also out scaling them in a side lane and teamfights.you also have a ton of options when it comes to lane phase vs them whether you prefer the conq/klepto route for outscaling them even harder or the grasp/comet route for just straight up winning lane

High elo Hardest: fiora, renekton, riven, jax, kennen, Darius Honourable mention: vlad Easiest: yas qiyana very fragile champs in general.

Darius riven: these champs make a comeback because of the soul crushing reason that with one well timed cc you get your e canceled and are more than likely dead regardless of your hp bar. (Riven w, Darius e) as well they both slaughter you in extended trades and have the tools to stop your escape (stuns or pulls)and the tools to chase you down even if they don’t (riven 40%cdr Darius runs ghost) playing against top level soloq players like brownmandarius revenge Adrian viper eclipse and dragoonsmash make this match up frustrating.

Vlad: he has all the tools to stonewall lane until he’s hit a point that he will be far more useful than you in teamfights and will need 2 people to deal with him.

Could you elaborate more on buffering abilities?

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

It sounds complicated but really it’s pretty simple, it’s just about using your abilities just before they silence/stun/get in range. Usually it’s used when your trying to sneak autos in you will buffer them at max range and walk away as soon as you get that auto. So like as garens q animation jumps you would use e or use q before it hits you

3
Ton_Cixot•

Am I retarded if I build a statik shiv on camille

7
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Electric types counter steel so yes, yes you are

28
Ton_Cixot•

In that case, what's your typical 1v9 build? I always feel like my damage falls off late game even with trinity steraks and ravenous

3
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

After the steraks change I agree her damage feels just shy of what it used to so one shots aren’t all that realistic anymore (especially through things like pd,knights vow) if you feel like your lacking late game damage, mercurials, deaths dance and ga are all fine options. Generally the build will look like

Trinity>rhydra>steraks>ga/mercurials and dd if I don’t need any more survivability.

Though often your going to need a second q rotation to one shot squishies who have a little bit of survivability.

7
Ton_Cixot•

O r what if I went trinity, steraks, infinity, statik, ga? Ez clap

3
Xx77funf•

How do you play lane vs Ranged match ups? I am slowly getting better at playing vs Bruiser and tanks, but I still struggle with champions like Kennen or Teemo. right now my strategy is just to go mundo and play for survival.

5
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Ranged match ups are all about being decisive about your fights and balancing your itemization between building items for laning (Doran’s,hexdrinkers, boots) and building what’s optimal for your build (trinity ravenous). Go in with a plan for when you believe you are strong enough to win a straight up fight and take it. If you think you need that hexdrinker and level 6 to beat the kennen in an all in, be sure to conserve health and miss as little gold and xp as possible until that point. Then back, get your items and prep to fight.

9
Xx77funf•

sounds good. But how do I stop myself from bleeding resources non stop?

5
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Take anti poke runes like second wind and extra resistance shards if you need to (double mr stat shards help a lot for this). As well you will usually have to give up ranged minions but if you get good at it you can farm cs in between their auto attacks. Don’t be afraid to use your tp to get back to lane and get a health/item advantage. A few neat little tricks people don’t know about is that if you have a point click ability (think vlad q) or you can get an auto off on the ranged champ you can pull the enemy minions closer to your side of the lane when they agro onto you, making it safer for you to farm them when they get low. As well, often the best time to let the enemy ranged champ auto you if when the waves first arrive because the most amount of cs will agro onto them causing them to take more damage in return. And lastly using bushes to keep out of sight of them while your trying to farm is helpful if they aren’t using the bushes to their advantage.

JosephSKYTo the victor, the spoils.•

What do you do when the meta, no matter how hard you try, it's totally against your champion? I'm a Jungle Sejuani/Toplane Shen 2TP and she has a 43% WR being played just by OTPs, which says a lot about her state, so I just spam my Shen and Toplane Ekko when he isn't banned, not gonna leave that pick open for the enemy. Sorry about the vent, I just feel bad because it doesn't matter how hard I try or how better than my opponents I am, Sejuani is just trash to climb and makes me sad... Edit: what do you do in Camille's/Toplane case, as in your mental mostly.

3
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Often times it can work to your benefit when those champions are weak or underplayed because people won’t know match ups relative to the person who plays their otp. So even if your champ is underpowered they will still have their strong sides and weak sides, sej for example still has her powerful early ganks and amazing mid late game utility. Making sure to play to your specific champions strengths will make a huge difference. Check out the maokai otp AMA for more in this over on summoner school his ign is aizo

I just was reading his AMA, he seems amazing. Thank you for your kind reply though!

notrety494,783 has the decency to die•

How do you push your lead when ahead? If my laner is not fighting I can't seem to get more than a kill or two in lane. As a follow-up, how to play from behind?

3
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

I’ll start from square one as a general way to extend your lead assuming this is after you back and buy your items or w/e it is you need.

  1. Get back to lane
  2. Hard shove the wave into their tower for 1 wave so that it will reset and meet your minions in the middle of lane.
  3. Pink ward the river bush or tri bush if you are on red side.
  4. Kill the minions so you have 1 more minion in your wave at the start of the wave (this will create a slow push into them)
  5. If the enemy steps up to clear minions, you have to make a point to pressure them either through trading if they don’t back away or just zoning them if they do. (This part can be very tricky to do if they are a ranged champion, often you will have to trade with them because they can push from ranged)

6, keep pressure on them (you don’t have to fight if they are standing really far back) while last hitting your minions so the wave keeps building, it will probably have grown to a 3 or 4 minion lead in your wave by the second wave. This is good.

  1. When the third wave arrives or whenever your wave starts to push into their tower, fully clear it and crash it into their tower.

7 and a half. At this point you need to decide if there is an opportunity for you to roam and kill someone close by, check the minimap to see if there is a fight or something going on near mid or jungle. You are either dedicating your resources to make a play or set up a freeze in the next minute and a half. We’re going to assume there isn’t anywhere for you to roam.

  1. Using your shield to mitigate tower shots, get some small damage on them when the huge wave is under their tower, just q-w them and run (understand this can be dangerous vs champs with immediate cc like renekton Darius)

  2. When their next wave arrives under tower to meet your big crashes wave, continue to pressure them over their cs (especially the ranged ones) and don’t try to kill their wave fast as you want it to build up into more than 6 minions so it pushes back to you.

  3. As their wave slowly comes back to you (you will be last hitting while pressuring them of course) try and keep 2-3 minions more in their wave then yours. They should try and start hard shoving their wave so that they can leave the lane and not get frozen on, you have to make a point to pressure them when they try to or you won’t be able to freeze and it will all be for nothing.

  4. The wave should be in the middle or in your side of the lane by now, (this is usually 2-3 waves after you crashed your big wave earlier) with them having 2-3 minions more in their wave than in yours.

  5. You have your freeze set up, and now just maintain the 3-4 minions more in their wave than yours, and keep pressure on them so they can’t just clear it as fast as possible, if they step up too far you can all in or just deny them cs until the freeze naturally breaks by getting too close to tower or cannon wave comes and naturally turns into a slow push back into them, rinsing and repeating the cycle.

Holy shit this is so thorough. Insane stuff dude

5
IcySneeze•

I mostly play Riven but this is so fucking helpful. I have a general idea of how to use wave management to get a lead but find it hard to put it into a game plan. Thanks for helping my hardstuck Plat ass.

2
HeroOfIvalice•

Is there anything you can do against Darius other than run comet and pray for ganks? Most of her hardest matchups feel pretty bearable but I don't think I've ever solo won vs Darius, even if he ints under my tower and drops a kill I never feel like I'm in a position to do anything (mid diamond)

3
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

3 points into w and then q max and take grasp or pta. You won’t ever be using your e aggressively into him unless he uses his e or you are going for an all in. You will just be focusing on whittling him down with w poke and keeping the wave close to your tower by baiting his q out so he naturally pushes lane into you, and can’t chase you down far. The match up is similar to jax in that it isn’t impossible but takes a lot of patience and consistency. You’ll be baiting out his trades and whittling him down until he gets to around 50% and then you can all in him to finish the kill before he gets 5 stacks. Your w has 50 range on his q and e so don’t eat anything for free, when he tries to q walk into it and q-q back away, if he tries to extend it with his e, use your e after his e and buffer an extra auto as your e is flying out. Post 6 it’s the same game plan but use your r to dodge his q after he hooks you.

6
HeroOfIvalice•

Thanks for the tips, you value grasp/PTA more than comet even though your gameplan is to poke and play slow? Just due to the better all in value right?

Hope to catch up to you at some point and see you in GM/CH :)

2
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Yep, both scale better than comet and have comparable early games. As well resolve specifically has better minor runes (boneplate, demolish or shield bash and revitalize are no joke for lane)

2
StormersEdge•

My absolute hardest matchup in top seems to be Renekton, can you tell me how you assess the lane and either win or not lose? Runes? Max order? Roaming??

3
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Generally, grasp with timewarp tonic and biscuits. Pre 6 your going to be starting q and playing super aggressive and in his face. Don’t ever let him step up to build fury in the wave without contest. You are far stronger before level 6 especially if you take control level 1 with q start and slow push the wave into to him and keep the pressure on. Crash the big wave lvl 2/3 whenever it naturally goes in and let it slow push back to you. Your gonna try to freeze with a health advantage from your levels 1/2 and build the biggest advantage you can before he gets 6. You don’t need tabis or Tiamat into this match up just rush trinity phage first. 3 points in w into q max, you are going to want to play for yourself this lane because it’s difficult especially if you set yourself behind by roaming and prioritizing your teammates. You can let a wave go if there’s a very close by fight going on that you can potentially pick up a kill in if you leave first, but don’t leave for 2 waves at a time or super frequently because you will lose yourself a lot of minion and xp and make the lane way harder than you need to. After 6 just be patient, get what cs you safety can and play for for your trinity spike to start getting feisty. If your both 0-0-0 and he’s only up 10-15 cs you’ve effectively won the lane.

10
SunRender•

Generally when you put 3 points into W and max Q, do you level E second, or finish up the last 2 points of W?

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

finish maxing e second and then put the final points into w, w has pretty low value mid late game but is really good in lane.

2
Zaporino•

What is your current ban rn? I ban fiora but id like to know if im wasting my time banning her. Maybe a more difficult matchup?

3
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

My personal vendetta is against renekton currently, but I usually no ban or ban yi because I think it’s important to practice vs everything so I can play the match up the best possible when it comes up.

5
anthinyle•

Hey man, I’m a new camille main here, just wondering what you think about Nuguri taking klepto in almost all his matchups as camille?

2
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

I think it’s really underrated by a lot of Camille players because of the fact you don’t get a combat keystone, but inspiration has the best minor runes by a large margin. With klepto magic boots biscuits and timewarp you get strong laning from biscuits and timewarp along with secondary resolve for boneplate+shield bash and you get a really accelerated build from klepto+boots. It’s a bit harder to use than grasp or pta because it requires more self control and has a slightly weaker lane phase, but I think it definitely has its pay offs. Generally for a newer Camille player I’d recommend starting with grasp or comet

5
OnuTaavi1,729,814 Wolfus•

I'd add that if you don't know how to make use of klepto properly, which most people below master probably won't, just don't take it. You need to know how to lane properly (lane macro and matchups). Otherwise you're just gonna get killed due to not having a combat keystone.

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

^ what wolfus said,

1
OnuTaavi1,729,814 Wolfus•

I think I asked u already but I don't remember xd... Have you played it recently? I've been spamming it a bit and like, if you lane well and don't make mistakes then it usually pays off very well. But even the smallest mistakes can easily hard lose the lane. I feel like it's a rune that rewards good play very well. But also hard punishes you for every mistake you make. I really like it tho, at least in matchups where you can easily proc it vs.

Who is the best toplaner you have ever played against?

2
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

When flame/solo/impact we’re at their peak playing in na (I want to say 2/3 seasons ago) on the accounts flame flame flame, jue viole grace, and impact. Games felt nearly pointless against them because they were so hard to play vs in lane on carry vs carry match ups that even if I was on point and got out even or ahead they would end up catching up in gold through really strong wave management and would have huge impact on fights at points I wouldn’t have seen with classic picks like gp rumble and Camille. Honourable mentions go to licorice when he was just an academy player because he took soloq really seriously and was really good too, as well as a really old player who from what I heard went to kr academy called ssita.

IcySneeze•

Any advice on getting better with learning matchups in detail? Simply playing them doesn't do the trick for me.

I find it quite hard to build consistency into matchups. It's a struggle to find detailed, and most importantly correct, matchup guides such as "You win an all in level X, before that short trade and don't get caught by Y ability. He is stronger after level Z so concede prio". Finding this out alone feels impossible for me as most of the time I can't relate my death to a certain powerspike of the enemy laner if I don't play their champion. So it just feels like I die because I got hit by X ability. This is especially the case with matchups like Darius where if yiu die once, top is over. A lot of the time Darius feels like an RNG matchup where he gets away with 5 hp and I die from going all in after seeing an opportunity.

So how did you personally get consistent with hard matchups?

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

A lot of it is trial and error, the problem in lower ranks is that you will get away with stuff you shouldn’t because players don’t play optimally majority of the time. Other than playing the match up a lot and looking at numbers / theory crafting interactions, make sure to talk to other people about it so that you can hear different ideas. Even at high elo I can play match ups 50 times but sometimes it helps me more to bounce ideas off other Camille mains like tIanboz, druttut/wolfus or Adrian riven every once in a while.

2
TIanboz1,153,146 discount cavele•

woof woof thats me

2
IcySneeze•

I suppose that makes sense. I admire the people who have managed to find the perfect formulas single handedly. Players not playing optimally in low elo is a big one as I recently found out I shouldn't be winning level 3 all ins vs Darius as Riven but I do sometimes in Plat. I imagine being able to quickly identify enemy mistakes in terms of playstyle and adapt to them is a big factor for improving. Thanks for the tips, I will go pester some Diamond players from my friend list.

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Yep no worries, take a look at the YouTube channel challenger replays if you need a reference for match ups. There’s no commentary over it but it’s still a decent way to see what does and doesn’t work most of the time.

I've seen Elmillor (jg m/gm in euw) NOT building Tiamat now on jg Camille, could you explain that?

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

The most important camps to clear right now are krugs scuttle and buffs and none of them require Tiamat to clear, plus Camille prioritizes heavy ganking and dueling early game so she doesn’t want to be farming camps much but would rather clear the camps that give the most xp (krugs scuttle buff) and then gank a lane or invade

2
OMGiMThoR•

Hi i really like AMA´s :)

What would you do vs Mordekaiser? I really have a hard time vs him. I often wiggle him down but then have no mana ... or he just afk pushes in and i have the feeling i need a jungler ... then he hits six and i hope my jungle dont comes xD

early hexdrinker or qss? Which runes and what to max? I feel when i build hexdrinker or qss my powerspike with Trinity and tiamat is super late :(

but i cant fight him with his ulti up and my jungler cant really gank after lvl 6 and he has no mana plus wave clear plus sustain etc...

even when i dodge q and e i often just manage to trade even and then he sustains back up and i run out of mana again xD

edit: plus his items are soooo fucking cheap

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Morde match up is similar to renekton in that hes pretty fragile pre 6, dont be afraid to trade into his passive as it takes nearly 10 seconds to add up to more than an auto. after 6 be safe and get small q2 trades to whittle him down before all ins.

1
SirSparky_•

Hello, I am a Camille main currently playing around mid-high diamond, and I find that I am having a lot of trouble specifically against Gangplank, to the point where whenever I see him in champ select it makes me want to dodge immediately. Is there any tips you would have for beating him in lane?

1
JarvisM33•

I feel that, GPs play style is just super annoying. Spam Q from range while sitting on a barrel so if you e into him he just pops it and runs away while your slowed. The worst part is even if you do manage to keep him under control he can always ult fights for KP and scale up gradually.

2
SirSparky_•

Exactly. I feel like if I try to all in him I'll die, but if I don't he free farms and pokes me down, all the while scaling insanely well into the late game

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

when you e in on him make sure to use your first aa-q to defuse the barrel, most people just dont use your auto reset enough to defuse barrels. Other than that you have to be very careful about leaving lane to roam too much since he shoves waves insanely fast and shreds through towers. Be patient when it comes to the early game against him because its normal to lose before first back because of his insane poke. You can whittle him down a bit with w's into q2 before all ins after first base.

when to rush tiamat and t2 boots?

1
CanadianrageOPCavelery NA (#1 Camille top)•

Been sticking to trinity rush with magical boots more often than not these days, Camille doesn’t really have the luxury of going secondary items early on because of how weak her dueling can be in comparison to other characters. Mainly just get your t2s vs champs like fiora or tryna, big auto attacker champs, most mages you’d want mercs against your better off just getting a phage so you can all in and get closer to trinity. Tiamat has been a no go lately too because it ruins your wave control which Camille really needs in the early game to really cement her leads.

2
