Opinions about 5g in Calgary

Just testing the waters to see what everyone things about 5g cell service eventually coming to Calgary?

It will offer faster mobile speeds, at the cost of a significant infrastructure update, and concerns about health because 5g is on a much more powerful frequency than the current LTE network.

Will be nice for the phone carriers to add another $25 a month to our basic data plans

What is wrong with the existing system?

2cats2hats•

I won't get into that. :)

5g tho is much quicker. For those only thinking cellphones and wondering what's wrong, think IoT or any wireless bandwidth heavy devices that would work MUCH better with more bandwidth.

2
Brocket97•

If you can't get enough bandwidth off of the existing system you need to seriously look at your application and the amount of data you are collecting/sending and if in fact you require that much.......

Keep thinking about today!

This is a good point. I think phones have hit a pretty good balance of speed/cost/battery life. When is the last time you waited for a youtube video to load?

2
floyd_peppers•

So slow.

Brocket97•

I've never noticed it being slow?

6
photoexplorer•

Me either, speed doesn’t seem to be an issue for me. Sometimes I have no bars though for no reason. A more consistent connection would help but the speed seems fine usually.

2
PM_ME_SOME_LTC•

If you’ve ever used a 5G network, our current one is painfully slow.

Brocket97•

It's not about the width of your band, it is how you use it.

Proper Spectrum for 5G in Canada is not yet available to carriers. An auction is looming in 2020: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/5g-wireless-spectrum-auction-1.4694214 . So for now you'll have to wait. It can take a couple of years to deploy that new spectrum. Lower speed 5G may be made available earlier using 600Mhz range, but that won't cover what's needed.

If it’s Chinese goods and services, yes I’m scared.

8

why? do they explode ? Do you know how many chinese things are in your home right now?

1
superchimmie•

Generally unreliable quality is one thing. It’s more of the security concern, not just personal but national. Come on, don’t try to be naive, as if you don’t know China is ambitious to take over the world.

I’m very conscious actually, i do my best to avoid made in China goods. Other countries need support to push back the Chinese financial bullying. I support the underdogs. Clothes are made in Vietnam, Indonesia or India mostly 🙂

1

as if you don’t know China is ambitious to take over the world.

China is not trying to take over the world any more than the Americans are trying to take over.

If you worried about spying, the Americans are the ones you need to be worried about. My data will get back to the Canadian government, thanks to the 5eyes arrangements - but if my data ends up back in China, they dont give fuck about sharing it here, where it matters.

I dont live in China so I dont give a fuck about what they think.

Is Huawei still involved?

We won't know until after the election

I am more concerned that speed will increase my usage. And data in Canada sucks the big one. 5g is only a good thing with truly unlimited data. Aka no throttling after a few gigs

7
Caidynelkadri•

That’s not how it works. Everything is still the same size you just get it faster.

Maybe because you use it more or something

2
NinjaGrrl23•

Is there such thing as 5G without Huawei? I don’t want anything to do with them, including having my day to day cell activities occurring on their equipment. As much as possible.

6
Elmeridk•

Might not be much better for you, but Rogers in the past year or so has spend an exorbitant amount of money on new 5g networks

4
ftwanarchy•

As far as I know that's what telus uses, or was planning to use

1
Nairbod•

Telus and Bell would be woefully behind for irresponsibly investing money into Huawei for 5G, so they could end up launching after Rogers who went with someone else.

Frequency has nothing to do with power.

Not all of 5G uses mm-wave frequencies.

So yes, we will get 5G. What it'll look like, who knows.

5

Can anyone tell me why I need 5G over LTE?

If its just about speed, I dont need anything above 4g for things like youtube on my phone.

It’s not about you.

It is about being able to do projects that require data to be communicated at a much higher rate. Self driving cars, drones, the whole smart-cities push.

Also, no one has succinctly explained the science disproving health risks.

Science man good seems to be the consensus.

2

That makes zero sense.

  • Self driving cars run autonomously most of the time with intertial systems built in. They are not beaming GB of data.

  • Drones are banned in most cities and if allowed, they also have inertial systems so that no need for massive data moves.

  • smart cities can operate just fine on LTE right now. Calgary is so far behind that even instantly having 5G would not mean our traffic lights would become smart in any way.

I would rather have BETTER coverage overall in the province than higher speeds in urban areas.

Lol seriously? Average consumer won't care and just want their new iphone

4
pr0leyyc•

5G is needed for things like driverless cars, drone deliveries and probably a bunch of stuff we don't even know about yet.
Even less jobs as uber drivers and skip the dishes deliverers will be replaced by automated devices.

As long as the entire infrastructure has no Hauwei components in it I'm okay.

I'm scared to imagine how much Telus and everyone else is going to charge us for it.

4
[deleted]•

I'm not worried in terms of health - our federal system has very stringent radiation and other health testing. It would not be approved if it posed any significant danger.

3
timegiver•

For some reason, this topic is forbidden in r/Calgary. Let's see how long it takes to be removed.

WorkmaskOP•

So far so good. Go free speech!

2
[deleted]•

I am concerned about the health impact and not sure how much it has been studied.

It seems that even asking this question subjects a person to ridicule which makes me more dubious of it.

2†
CheeseSandwichhamburger magician •

It's a reasonable question to ask, but the issue is when people respond with thoughtful, well-researched answers and those responses are just dismissed without any consideration because it doesn't fit your preconceived notions.

4
WorkmaskOP•

The concern is fair, and there are arguments on both sides but the reality is it's a very new technology, at a new frequency level, and we just don't know what the long-term effects will be.

1
Orchid-Orchestra•

I'm on your side. Don't want so much RF exposure.

That's one reason I've kept my land line.

I turn off my household WIFI at night too.

-2†
PM_ME_SOME_LTC•

There are no health effects. Zero. Zilch. You’re both being misled by charlatans preying on dumbasses for nebulous reasons.

7
[deleted]•

Do you have any sources on that?

-1
PM_ME_SOME_LTC•

Here’s a nice quick podcast on the topic. Or you can just read the transcript and at the bottom there’s all of the references you could need.

6
whiteout86•

People actually turn off their WiFi at night?

5
WorkmaskOP•

It's more common than you would think.

2
someotherposter•

Huh, I don't even have to turn mine off - my Telus router does it for me. It's not a bug, it's a feature!

1
Elmeridk•

I feel bad for anyone that thinks that watts (mostly less than) of rf energy at non-inionizing frequencies of energy causes any health effects whatsoever

2†
omber•

It won't work. 5G has huge issues with heat emissions from radio chips. Yeah it will get rolled out and everyone will default to LTE because 5G makes handsets overheat. Go look up the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G demo lol.

1
freerangehumans74•

Did you mean to say "headsets" or was that supposed to be "handsets"?

2
omber•

Handsets, thanks for catching that.

2
Teena1125•

My guess is that most people either don't care or have a bad taste in their mouth from the Telus/Huawei association.

1
canuckistanmigrantDowntown East Village•

If there's a tree between you and the 5g transmitter on a red light/pole, your signal will drop.

If you walk one block, the signal will be gone.

5g will be a reality when there are a couple of "towers" on every block, in the entire city. I don't think that can happen in the next few years, maybe in a few neighborhoods.

1
WorkmaskOP•

Agreed, the infrastructure upgrade required is massive since the 5g frequencies have a shorter range than the LTE bands. (Twice as many cell towers as now, maybe more).

2
canuckistanmigrantDowntown East Village•

The LTE range is measured in km/miles, while 5g range is measured in feet.

Think of it as wifi range, maybe worse.

1

More like 10x

1
dotca•

Can’t wait for faster speeds so I can go through my dog shit data plan even faster

1

Thats certainly one reason the providers are eyeing this. More $$$$$ for share holders.

I'm for it, but not if Huawei is involved..
