In light of recent events, how would you feel if 10% of CIG was bought Tencent, like Elite Dangerous?

I know we're mostly happy being free and almost completely self funded.

But what if it meant completely securing funding into completion, and potentially doubling the market by appealing various articles of content to the East?

What would be the real cost and deficit to the game? Or is this whole thing is somewhat overblown by the media?

I would be very very afraid of what Chinese censorship would impose on the game. No nudity, no blood, no zombies etc... Not that I expect SC to have lots of these things but SC is an unrestricted game currently. If China puts their finger on it, we would go the way of Blizzard very, very fast.

No zombies?

CMDRCommandOPCommando•

At least no visible bone/skeletons, because of this wackyness the Chinese have their own censored version of World of Warcraft because of it.

TheOGRageraegis•

It’s easy, don’t sell to: EA, Blizzard, all of China. Maybe if they could sign on the DICE team without EA, gunplay would be outstanding

They don't care about that stuff. They would only required it to be censored for the domestic market if they even did censor it

1
JitWeaselorigin•

10% wouldn't buy them enough input over the matter. The most it'd do is give them a different version. They don't need the Chinese market. Not for a crowd funded game.

Mainland Chinese already play this game.

Awesome

GeneralZex•

Has it ever been about needing the Chinese market and not the boatloads of money that can be made going into the Chinese market?

A 10% stake purchased by Tencent may not give them much power to make the decision on their own but Tencent’s deep pockets and expertise on the Chinese market could certainly be leveraged to persuade CR to do it.

2
JitWeaselorigin•

Yes, they'll be able to help them in that market because tencent has connections and it's more corrupt than even the United States. But i just mean, is it worth it? Do they need tencent to take a stake? I dont think so. Though they gave that marketing company some equity I guess.

1
GeneralZex•

I don’t know if it’s worth it because I don’t know all of the risks associated with doing business there. From a strictly monetary point it could be worth it, since capturing even a small percentage of the population would yield substantial revenue.

I would immediately get a refund as that was not part of the deal.... If you want to suck the teet of communism....you can burn in holy fire.

With how China strongarms people into censoring things, I’d really rather not have something like that happen

NemeSys4565•

First, I don't care to appeal to that market.... At all. Period.

Second, I'm actually quite happy to not appeal to that market.... At all. Period.

Probably a lot of community leaving it.

But it ain't a publically traded company so no risks there, and i doubt Chris would ever wish something like that.

NO NO and THRICE NO!

Chris has said multiple times, they have enough money to finish the game.

Investors beyond us backers, isn't needed.

Taking that kind of money, from those kinds of people, at this time, in this political climate, would shatter the Chris Roberts image of an outsider with more integrity than the established gaming industry.

Since a lot of the funding depends on that image, I could see the well dry up REAL fast after such a deal. CR could try and explain it away, but that could've only worked a few years ago. That shit kills reputations now with the images of HK protesters on the news every day. With the already thin ice that CR has been skating on, with most of the media knowing him as the guy who crowdfunded the most expensive video game of all time that is still in development... Well, the media would jump all over him.

So how would I feel? I'd feel like the dream was dead.

mrv3•

Troubled, not because there's anything wrong with them selling any portion of the company but rather how close they sold it to the last investor.

Even the most pessimistic man alive about Star Citizen, DS, would be bold faced lying if he claimed Star Citizen was currently in a dire financial situation at their current operating rate they have years left in the tank at worst.

3 years in the future? Understandable but if they where sell now it'd imply that either

A. The $46 million is gone

B. That Tencent is paying a ridiculous sum

2
ChubbsAndMaiAxenew user/low karma•

Looking at the companys house report the 46 million is about half gone at minimum as we dont know if the la studio spent any of it.

1
mrv3•

They have not spent half of it it's a touch confusing but it just means the UK received half.

1
ChubbsAndMaiAxenew user/low karma•

Yes, and they broke about even that year.

1
mrv3•

They had $4 million at the end of 2018 (my estimation) and are losing $9 million per year (estimation) meaning of that investment fund they should have by years end used $5 million or around 11%

1
kinren•

If cig wants to enter the chinese market they would have to do something like this. Tencent is a gate keeper to the chinese market and that is why they have fingers in all these companies.

"Or is this whole thing is somewhat overblown by the media? " welcome to the real world

JitWeaselorigin•

Ha. Someone probably should be a ball buster and keep CR under control. Maybe we'd have a game by now. I mean, his quest for a game emmy and chasing the dragon after the wing commander movie is cute and all...but we'd like a game. 😂 In all seriousness, they're doing good work and I think we'll end up with a terrific game. Given they turn people down who are coming with money in hand looking for ships is a good sign (even if frustrating). They certainly have the funding they need. I wish they'd settle on certain areas and cut common corners that most others in the industry cut...but at the end of the day I support them and look forward to the end result. It's a good thing they don't have anyone to answer to. Not that 10% would yield much input at all. But it's just good to not have baggage. They can listen to players more (not that Im convinced that they listen to the players more than any other game publisher, but at least if they do, there's no extra red tape).
