Birth Control Availability in Guatemala

I have a friend who's going to Guatemala soon and she's been having trouble getting her Birth Control prescription refilled before her travel date. So 2 questions (if anybody knows).

  1. Where would she go to purchase birth control pills?
  2. What kind of Birth Control brand availability might you find in Guatemala?

hey,

Most BCs are available in Guatemala with no prescription required. It would be ideal if she could call a pharmacy ahead of time and enquire if they have the kind she needs. Please also know that Guate has the most expensive medications in all Central America.

Also maybe she could consider getting an IUD before going down so she won’t have to worry about it.

Thanks for the useless non-answer. Your "I enjoy giving people obvious information that they didn't ask for" shirt is in the mail.

Lol it’s a legitimate suggestion, a friend of mine who was moving to Guatemala got an IUD before leaving specifically so she didn’t have to worry ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The IUD is an option everyone knows about. She's made a specific decision about the birth control she wants I'm not going to tell her to modify her extremely personal choices.

Aprofam is a government clinic that she can get free birth control, when I live there that's where my wife got hers, or just look for a local Gynocologyst (female) and ask her about it to... By the way Aprofam clinics usually are in every town

Many pharmacies carry Diane and Acrea, prod qlg others buts those are the ones I know about, you may not find it the smaller privately owned ones but the big chains like Meykos, Cruz Verde, CarolinayH should carry it.

Diane (Bayer) is about $30 for the box in Meykos. She can also look up for the one she uses on CarolinayHs website (www.carolinayh.com) even if she doesn’t buy it there it should give her an idea if it’s available and how much it could be

I live in Guatemala, maybe I can help with any pharmacy number or something else?

I would say that aprofam is the cheapest option, but big pharmacies like Galeno an Meykos carry a wide variety of birth control and condoms. You can find birth control pills also in the pharmacies inside Walmart :) it really depends on the location she is going to... If she is going to antigua for example http://www.wingsguate.org wings guate is a foundation that works with low price birth control.

The morning after pill is not available, it's handy to have for yourself or others if need be. For BCP you don't need a prescription, just go to the pharmacy.

The morning after pill was not available in Guatemala a few years ago according to the pharmacist I went to and the Guatemaltecas I asked. It is now? I can't find any source to say it has been legalised.
