Setting environmental launch options on non-steam proton games?
Basically, I have a Japanese game and need to set LANG to make certain characters print correctly. On steam games, usage of %command% allows this, but on non-steam games %command% seems to have no effect. Short of using a shell script to launch via proton and telling steam it's a native game, is there any way to make this work?

I guess you can call it a bug. But what happens is anything you put in Launch options is appended to the end of the command. There's a GitHub issue here:

What I'd recommend doing is launching steam like:
LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 steamI haven't tried this but you could try adding LANG to user_settings.py in ~/.steam/steamapps/common/Proton 4.11. See user_settings.sample.py (in the same directory) for examples of other variables. If that doesn't work you may try adding some python code there something like
os.environ['LANG'] = 'ja_JP.UTF-8'I haven't tested this but there's just some ideas.
Unfortunately, launching steam that way would cause problems for other games. It might be possible to abuse protonfixes to apply it though, I hadn't considered that. Barring that, as much as it makes picking proton version a pain in the ass, it may be best to just say screw it and hardcode the proton version into the shell script.
For the record, this is for Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue. The English patch works well, but a few minor things didn't translate (such as character names) and it irritates me more than it should to have them as unmatched characters.
