Major Simms's long term scientist boyfriend Frank Muller.

Spoiler

This character is almost certainly a reference to fantastic audiobook narrator (and long time Stephen King and John Grisham reader) Frank Muller, whose career was tragically cut short by a 2001 motorcycle accident that eventually took his life (after which he won both the 2002 and 2003 Audie Awards for best male narrator despite no longer working, because he was that damn good).

While you're waiting around for Craig Alanson and RC Bray to continue delivering the magnificence that we all crave in January, I highly recommend looking up some of Frank's work. His versions of Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption or The Talisman, both by Stephen King, are a good place to start.

Hopefully this isn't too far off topic.

You definitely need Galaxy's Edge also narrated by Bray in your life then. Super fun series. KTF!

Oh yeah, (and this recommendation is totally out of scifi realm), but you need the Aubrey Maturian series narrated by Patrick Tull in your life as well. Holy smokes is that good!

Oh man I never knew this happen. I was listening to Stephen Kings Dark Tower series and Muller did the first 4. I really liked his voice and got used to it. Then I get book 5 and someone completely different is narrating. I was was like what the crap. I just figured he just moved on from the series. The new guy was ok but no Muller. Plus the series kinda tanked after book 5.

Isn't that the guy who narrated some of The Dark Tower series? That's the biggest reason why I didn't get those audiobooks years ago. I'm worried the change in narrator changes the voice, tone, and intensity of the books the first narrator already established.

He did the first 4, and the guy who finished the series also did an updated version of book 1. So it can kinda go back and forth.

George Guidall is also a good narrator, but there is definitely a difference in tone which can really screw with your mental image of the characters.

I experienced Guidall for the first one (didn't know it was re-recorded) then it went Mueller for the next three. I agree that changing up the narrator is usually bad juju, but the transition to Mueller was an improvement (and Guidall is really, really good). Mueller's Eddie Dean was prob my favorite thing about his performance. When it went back to Guidall, I remember being disappointed, but it wasn't as jarring because I had experienced Guidall reading this before.
