Name Advice

DMing

I'm going to be starting a homebrew with some friends soon, and I'm trying to fill in the world with NPCs. I'm having no trouble coming up with roles that need to be filled, personalities and some backstory for them, but I am having trouble coming up with good names. My go to usually end up being in the territory of puns. A healer named Dr. Vera, if they ask its allo vera. I just don't want that kind of name scheme for everyone. The Xanathar random name table is kinda forgettable. Anyone have any advice?

Seconded. I use this all the time - for d&d, for writing, or anything else I need a name for.

Modifying names from your everyday life is fun My niece is the queen of the local cloud giants. I like her. My ex daughter in law is a green dragon whom my players have already killed two of thier three siblings. The green dragon skin is an apt fit but unless my stepson joins the game then the inside joke just helps me deal with a person who keeps making his life miserable.

One piece of advice I would give is to only fill in the highlights and keep a list of names for the less important characters. For example, if you are going to have a Hooper or Cartwright, don't bother with their names. It's good to know a community has them if it comes up, but odds are slim. My first Homebrew city has been lived in for a year now and I wasted some good character creation on NPC's that haven't been met. :)
