A user tears her hair out over other users' bald assertions about hair salon prices for women in r/WatchPeopleDieInside
Do women's haircuts cost more because they are different from men's haircuts, or because women's salons are usually "fancy places" and people are sexist?
The first slapfight is based on two users' comparisons with the prices of their boyfriends' haircuts:
- One bf tried getting a complicated 'female' haircut with layering and was charged more (this comment kicks things off).
- The other bf got a full haircut plus beard trim for half the price of his gf's one-inch bang trim.
The discussion heats up because one user will not make do with anecdotes and unverifiable evidence.
This same user also takes on a more militant user who accuses others of hairsplaining and invokes the 'pink tax' that women pay for their haircuts. Their response is dismissive:
And while the women are tackling the big issues, the men in that thread are congratulating each other on the cheap haircuts they can find: 10 euro in Europe, £4.50 in Britain, and as low as $1.5 somewhere very cheap!
Here's the thread in full.

My question is why would you continue to go there
Because this wasn't an accurate paraphrase. The commenter got one inch off her length and a bang trim.
Now if the woman in question already had longer hair, then shampooing, blowdry, and just getting it too look right does take longer and is more effort than just doing a fade + long on top, which is most guy's haircuts.
FWIW, I'm a salon receptionist. A lot of times, if a woman with shorter hair is getting something simple like a man's cut, we'll charge them for a men's cut ($23). So far in my experience we've only had one long haired guy came in and he cut all his hair off, but other than than, most of our male clients get basic, 20 minute men's cuts. Even the women's short cuts typically require more layer and styling. Our women's cuts are $40. If the hair is extra long, we do have a long hair charge of $15.
A bang trim by itself? $10. Free, if you're a regular coming in between appointments.
I'm a firm believer in not paying to get my hair cut. But I think your prices are fair considering two things, 1: people are obviously willing to pay your prices and 2: Hair styling and cutting requires a lot of skill and trust, Hair Stylists deserve to be paid for those skills.
These prices are about in line with what I pay. I definitely get hit with the long hair charge, but it makes sense since there's more of it to dry and style. And especially so with how thick my hair is--overall it's a lot of work for my stylist.
There's a woman in my neighborhood who does cheap haircuts and is really fair in pricing women vs. men. The place is run down, and she's always smoking out front when she's not working, but she does a great job and she's inexpensive.
You're questioning why the BF would go there?
No, why the gf would
