fake and straight
No shit...he literally shows the guy the empty chlorinator...and then says "Oh, it's this fucking cat sized animal in here that's the problem...ya know, the thing that barely fits in there, that you didn't see when you were looking all the way through it."
@Russell_Arch - please explain how you knew someone was going to return a device at an obscure pool shop? Otherwise, it would appear you just hired an extra to "do a return" and then played the prank which seems disingenuous.
He says elsewhere that they got a local business owner in on the act and had them send an employee with the filter prop to the store.
The actual employee was unaware, so the reaction is legit.
Ahhh makes sense. Thanks,

But, for real, what a shitty setup. Probably paid for by Leslie's pool supply.
This has been answered several times in this comment thread... but safe to say that I've never - in 20 years of producing/directing hidden-camera - ever had someone "fake" a reaction on camera.
It had? As far as I could see (I'm newer to reddit), my question was the first one like this, and I asked specifically because there was no information posted related to it. When I first posted my response there were only like 25 posts here. Is there some kind of hidden scheme where there are hundreds or thousands more posts here that I'm missing?
😉 And we all know you would tell us if you did, and ruin a, somehow, profitable business model.
Nobody is buying this shit, it's stupid and fake as fuck. I feel dumber for watching it, and I'm disappointed in my fellow man for making this popular.

Well, if we were "faking it"... we'd certainly have had someone expose us by now, right? I mean we've shot this show for six straight years now, with about 110 episodes, and several thousand people who've aired on television. If these were "actors" as everyone claims, then wouldn't a few of them be on TV, or in movies, or somewhere? Also, we have TONS of participants who tell the story of how they were on the show on YouTube, Twitter... and yes, even Reddit... yet no one claims what you're accusing us of? How does that happen?
Good point, nobody would lie for money. How stupid am I for thinking someone would pretend to be that fucking stupid for some dollars?
Are you honestly supporting this video? The guy you had bring this back, saw an empty chlorinator...and then was convinced that it had an animal in it that was nearly the size of the entire chlorinator? If that's the case, you're taking advantage of the mentally challenged, and you should be ashamed of yourself...but...I doubt that's the case.
Look, I know you're going to defend your ruse to the end of the earth...but I'm not buying it. It's easier and cheaper to find people to pretend to be surprised than it is to find people dumb enough to be truly dumbfounded. I don't believe you, and I think you're defending your show because it falls apart when people realize it's just some staged bullshit. This is obviously staged, and you look like an idiot pretending it's all organic. But, continue on. Also, your show sucks.
Have you guys never seen a baby hippo... this doesnt look like one at all. Well not the head/face at least.
It literally just looks like a guinea pig...I didn't even realize it was completely hairless until I got to the comments and read the title. It looks exactly like a guinea pig.
Are you seriously a producer for Carbonaro Effect? Not just pulling our legs? I love that show, my parents and I watch it all the time. Heck, I just watched it last night. If it's really you then you should do an AMA.
Yep, it’s really me. If you search my comment history, I’ve even gone so far as to post a photo of my DGA card. As for an AMA, there are many things that I can’t talk about in relation to the magic performed on the show, so I’ve been hesitant about taking part in an AMA where people expect answers to “anything”.
Understandable. Half your questions would probably be "how is this trick done?"
How have I lived my entire life and not seen these?! They're brilliant!

The reaction of someone who has never owned a guinea pig, lol.
Dude, I’ve owned a few guinea pigs in my day... but this hairless, black variety was weird looking as hell.
How did you go about procuring a hairless black guinea btw?
All guinea pigs are hairless if you have the right attitude.
And they're all black if you have enough Sharpies.
My kids have a few of them. They're called Skinny Pigs. In Oregon there is a breeder who sells them. My kids call them House Hippos.
I'm a guinea by birth...I can tell you there's not a single one of us that's hairless. When we have alopecia we just look like a normal human with a full head of hair, eyebrows, and a pretty hairy chest.
Also, I'm pretty sure it is illegal to own us...but I'm not slave-ologist.
Kind of, but the little earsies and eyesies are just too recognizable for me. Although the hairless ones are pretty weird looking for sure!
Which baby hippo post? Can you give a link?
I think it may have been this one... but there’s a TON if you search for them.
Next thing he was gonna ask “ can I like... adopt him...” 100% sure I’d have asked that even after finding out it’s a trick. That things way too cute.
Ok, this is awesome. Dude's caught so unaware because he came to the store, he actually doesn't even process where that thing might have come from...
Off to watch some more of your uploads.
EDIT: Downvoted cos y'all can't read or trust... Follow this comment chain naysayers: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/dy0026/saw_the_baby_hippohairless_guinea_pig_post_on/f7xms10
Dude...You should 100% check your house for a carbon monoxide leak.
Better than that... watch this playlist. It’s got some of our better tricks we’ve ever done:

Could you please explain how you knew there would be a return on the day you’re filming?
Dude, shits fake. Do you believe everything you see on TV?
Gracias señor.
♥️
I love this! My dad and I have started bonding over your videos and now we watch it together all the time. I just wanted to say thank you to you and your team.
Very cool! Thanks! We do have new episodes airing every Thursday... and this season is one of the best we’ve ever done!
This is so sad.
Why?
So fake
So fake it makes my dick hurt. And it takes a lot to make my dick hurt. He was small growing up...so, ya know....had to become pretty tough.
It's a legit reaction to magic. That's the show.
The angles and cuts are so frequent it makes it even less believeable that this is a "legit reaction".
Why is it filmed in a way that you can't see when the "baby hippo" gets put in to the filter? Of course you don't want the customer to see the magic but why not let the audience in to see what's happening a little?
The "customer" is looking down at the filter all the time and the animal is too big to be inserted by sleight of hand into the filter so does he just swap the filter with a prepared separate filter?
/edit The store that this "customer" bought the filter, Leslies, doesn't sell this type of chlorinator.
The guy that brought it in was setup by his boss. Boss told him to return the filter to Leslies, guy has no idea what's going on.
I mean, Michael is on Reddit and could probably talk to it. u/MichaelCarbonaro
I don’t believe this is legit at all. I wish it was though.
Well, I've produced "The Carbonaro Effect" for six years now (and other hidden-camera shows for 15 years) and have never faked a thing. Fake reactions are the antithesis of what hidden-camera delivers as a genre, and the shows that partake in having people fake reactions thankfully never last.

So did you just wait until so done came in to return a chlorine filter?
So you actually produced it?

It must get so exhausting constantly having to refute the iamverysmart naysayers. I live in Atlanta and actually ran into “Suburban Pimp” at flatiron. I recognized his face before figuring out where I had seen him. Dude was as legit as they come. I also do a ton of local background work and would def recognize if you guys were using actors as there’s no shortage of them in the area. It’s also easy to tell when an amateur actor is faking it versus a genuine reaction from the ones you guys get. Anyway, I’m preaching to the choir.
Yeah, I love that “Suburban Pimp” guy, because he was actually in the store that day buying a chef’s outfit for a music video he was shooting for his rap career. If you haven’t see it, I actually cut the part where Michael reveals the show to that guy, and it’s awesome. https://youtu.be/r0f3NlYsTE8
One of the hardest parts of that trick was tracking down his buddy who designed the panda t -shirt and getting him to sign a release to see his design on TV.
I hope one day we can show the alternate version we did where we had a matching outfit for a girl who was in the shop with her boyfriend and called it “The Cheating Girlfriend”.
Me and my family love the show! Its the best thing on cable to watch as a family, we turn it on at least one Sunday a month and have it play all day since you can jump back into it at any time and it’s kid friendly. Also my grandmother who just passed away recently was given quite a few laughs from it and i am happy to have those memories with her. Thanks for your hard work on the show.
Wow! This is too cool. It’s always great to hear about families who watch the show together. I know we’ve aired marathons before on Thanksgiving and Christmas and have heard that many families stumbled onto the show and watched it as a group. Thanks for sharing this!
If theres no marathon we usually just play it on demand, is it available for any streaming service?
