PSA: If you don't have Amazon Prime yet, get it on December 13!

Show

One of the metrics they likely track is percentage of new accounts that view an Amazon Prime Video. Another metric might be "first thing a new Amazon account will do". Either way it indicates WHY you bought the Amazon Prime account. I'm tired of networks like SyFy cancelling great shows, and I want to make sure Amazon will see the direct result of bringing The Expanse on the platform.

I'll be getting Amazon Prime on December 13th, and I hope all of you who don't have it yet will join me.

I'm a fan of the show and everything, but I for one am not traveling all the way to a giant forest in South America to watch it. Will probably wait for it to come out on bluray.

Would a VPN work?

9
otterfish•

You wouldn't download a tree.

41
archlinuxisalright•

Likely not. Amazon Prime Video does not allow streaming if it detects that you're using one. AFAIK the only way it can tell is if it sees that your IP corresponds to known VPN providers. You may be able to find one they don't know about. Hell, maybe they forgot to block their own server pools and you can make your own VPN on AWS and watch it through there.

I'm getting it on VHS.

Um, I think you missed the point?

OP isn't telling you where to watch the show. They're suggesting an idea for the best time to get one to support the show.

Whether that's true or you agree with it is another matter, but your reply seems to ignore the premise of the OP.

Just a tip if you have a .edu email you get prime half off

64
cydonian-monk•

Just a tip ... half off

Sounds painful.

Is it any .edu email address? Had I known I would have used my Alumni email address, which is just a simple forwarder but definitely ends in .edu.

25
killerrin•

It doesn't have to be .edu. Amazon basically has a list of every single school email address. College and University, Public and Private... a couple highschools that have them. All you got to do when signing up under Prime Student is just select the option to verify using school email and input it in. They'll email you a verification link to that email address, which you go click and continue the process from.

... Technically, you dont even need to still be a student. Just still have access to your email. Of which, you'd be surprised how many schools don't deactivate student email accounts. It basically works in your favour for everything from a free Office 365/Google Suite subscription, all the way to free/discounted software and services.

17
DarkWhims•

Using school email addresses only goes so far: they finally capped me off with my discounted Amazon Prime after 4-5 years. Then they charge you full price again.

9
FrannyDoubleA•

Yeah, they ask for proof of classes and schedule after that point, but honestly after one year of full price Amazon Prime, I'm not too bummed.

2

Is this just an US thing? Because I may have access to an .ac.nz email address. :)

Nope. We get it with my SO's .ac.uk account.

2

I graduated years ago just checked my old edu email had to verify my student number and change my password that had expired. And ditto I'm reading 4 year old emails from profs and classes I can't remember.

My wife works for a University and we use her work email for half off

14
xenokilla•

you can also get spotify, hulu, and showtime for $5/month

6
Antanarim•

Is this worldwide? Or just in America?

1
amazondrone•

In the UK we don't have .edu addresses, so I'm guessing it's America only.

3
flyteuk•

We get it with my SO's .ac.uk account.

2
bearhoon•

If it works anything like the UK, you can keep that discount even if you move away from the .edu email.

I got Amazon Prime about 10 years ago, when I was a student. It automatically accepts the .ac.uk email.

When I graduated, I lost that email (got replaced with an alumni one that ends .com). Now my Amazon account is tied to my gmail.

However Amazon just auto renew at the discounted price, and have done about 5-6 times in a row now!

1
Nimueh•

Amazon.com says title not available in my location. WTF. What's the point of Amazon buying the rights if they're going to apply geographical limits on the internet, ffs.

I am based in Slovakia. Anyone can tell me where can I watch this legally?

31
matheusmaggi•

Not amazon.com, but primevideo.com

Nimueh•

Thanks. That works.

13
Stinkis•

Not the guy above but that link says the same. I can understand some of the rights of s1-s3 might exist from before they bought it but there's absolutely no reason at all that season 4 should be region locked.

3
Etunimi•

Which country are you in? There are multiple different country-specific Amazon sites.

edit: The links are:

The Expanse is not available in Cuba, Iran, Mainland China, North Korea, and Syria, but one of the links above should work for all other regions and all 3 seasons should be included.

Make sure any VPN is disabled.

edit: Added Japan link. It couldn't be found by Amazon search with the English name.

What's an SDE?

I know you can't tell us how the metrics work, but can you tell us an action that would make it clear to Amazon that the Expanse is a good investment (that they should continue funding)?

1
Andrassy•

I got it about 3 weeks ago, and then proceeded to watch the entirety of The Expanse and a bunch of other shows like The Boys. And then I'll watch Season 4 as soon as it airs.

Surely this has to count just as much as someone who signed up on Dec 13th?

Seriously, they gotta know what you care about, regardless of when you signed up.

And another thing is, I'll keep my subscription going. I think this is also very valuable. More so than signing up exclusively for The Expanse, or exploiting the free trial to watch it, which might actually be bad rather than good.

15
diggin4stefon•

I've just been watching it in a loop whenever I'm home basically. They should notice the numbers.

6
nabrok•

Amazon has mentioned previously that a metric they look at is what the first show a new account watches is. You watched The Expanse first, so all good.

Obviously this is not the only metric they look at, but it's a part of it.

5
TechRepSirOP•

They definitely look at other metrics.

Another metric that many companies (if not nearly all) measure is 'churn rate' (people who cancel subscriptions). What would be really bad for the expanse is if people cancelled subscriptions right after they finished watching the show.

So either way, you'll help the cause. This post was just to organize the handful of people who don't have prime yet.

canceling great shows

What other shows have they had beside the expanse? I don’t think of quality shows when I think of scifi channel.

12
TexasKornDawg•

I am still pissed about Stargate Universe. But i understand that it was not everyone's cup'o'tea...

29
INTHEMIDSTOFLIONSBabylon's Ashes•

Is that the star gate sag-1 and Atlantis or did they have a separate series called star gate universe?

I never see any of them, tbh.

4
TexasKornDawg•

It was part of that 'Universe', but it was it's own show... Got cancelled after just two seasons, just as the show was starting to find it's "Grove". I really liked both seasons, but alot of people felt that the 1st season was not very well written and "all over the place"... Then of course SYFY cancelled it...

9
iNOTgoodATcomp•

I miss SG:U introducing me to music I didn't know I loved, but I'ma just assume they all died in the void.

1
INTHEMIDSTOFLIONSBabylon's Ashes•

Ah.

If a tv show only has like 1-2 seasons I don’t want to invest my time into loving characters just to have it to end so sudden. Same with movies, I’m much more likely to invest in longer shows or movies with sequels than I am with just one shot tv shows or movies.

-4
tqgibtngo•

What other shows have they had ...?

Syfy (formerly Sci-Fi) has presented a number of space sci-fi shows including:

16
blekkja•

I quite liked their miniseries version of Dune, too.

Lexx is one of my all time favourites too. I worship his shadow.

7
tqgibtngo•

miniseries version of Dune

D'oh, I'd forgotten about that. I'll add to the list.

4
archlinuxisalright•

They also did Children of Dune. Caprica (reimagined BSG spinoff) was also pretty good, but that lasted for one season.

5
INTHEMIDSTOFLIONSBabylon's Ashes•

Oh wow! I didn’t know those were syfy

2
Jerthy•

Yeah they made all the best oldschool scifi shows. And promptly killed every single one of them.

6
legacy642•

BSG is a notable difference. The show runners decided to end it on their terms. Wether that was a good choice or not is subjective.

2
greenslime300•

SG-1 and Atlantis seemed to live long enough

1
akaenragedgoddess•

Firefly?

2
tqgibtngo•

Firefly?

Originally on Fox.

I only intended to list some shows which, IINM,
Syfy (formerly Sci-Fi) was first to air in the US.

2
haberdasher42•

Lexx was not produced by Sci Fi. It was primarily a Canadian thing. Frankly for how awesomely weird it was I'm surprised it aired there at all.

1
tqgibtngo•

IINM, The Expanse was not produced by Syfy either. Correct me if I'm wrong but IIUC, Syfy was a development partner, but the primary production company was (and still is) Alcon, right?

There may be errors in my incomplete list, but I intended to include space-oriented science fiction shows that Syfy / Sci-Fi was first to air in the U.S. (even shows they didn't produce themselves).

1
nabrok•

12 Monkeys and The Magicians.

1
tqgibtngo•

12 Monkeys and The Magicians.

(My list omitted those because I only intended to list space-related shows.)

1
Rmf16•

Dark matter was really good too and got cancelled

13
diggin4stefon•

Agreed. I've watched it through a couple times. The Expanse blows it out of the water, but it's still really good.

7
seanandahalf•

Happy! and Deadly Class are two this year alone they cancelled. Both were pretty good/had promise

3
Xian244•

And both had like a dozen people actually watching it. What do you guys expect them to do? Continue making shows that lose them millions?

There's no simple winning move here for Syfy. Especially with them targeting a demographic that's cutting the cord faster than anyone else.

3
akaenragedgoddess•

They did it to themselves and us. Before DVRs, they moved shows around all willy nilly and it helped kill them. Then they cancel them citing low viewership. Noone trusts them to continue a show anymore. I like an ending to my shows. They got me invested a half dozen times and then the series is cancelled with no resolution. I've been done with them for years. I won't watch a show on their network.

1
seanandahalf•

I mean yeah they had pretty low viewership but that's kinda on SyFy and not the shows themselves. Cancelling a show after one season is pretty bad practice unless it's absolutely terrible. Unless it's hbo I don't think many shows are well known in their first season. Even breaking bad didn't become the cultural phenomenon it is until a few seasons in. You gotta give it a bit of time. And SyFy isn't even a popular network really to begin with. Were they expecting game of thrones numbers or something?

1
Xian244•

95% of all shows lose viewers every season. The growth GOT/BB saw was absolutely exceptional.

1
illuminati229•

Oasis didn't even make it past the Pilot.

2
h00rayforstuff•

I really enjoy the Magicians and season 5 drops in January I believe. The first four are on Netflix.

1
thesynod•

I generally think the drive to create dozens of paid subscription streaming services is doing to that segment what the networks did to basic cable, but, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Disney and CBS can't offer free delivery on purchases. So Amazon Prime it is.

11
nabrok•

Yeah, I've had prime since all it did was free delivery, so the video stuff is just a bonus! Netflix I get a deal on with my cell phone so I keep that as well, and Hulu I watch often enough that it's my 3rd "permanent" streamer.

The rest of them I subscribe and cancel as I want to watch something on them. Preferably through amazon's channels system if I can.

3
Musabi•

When they announced they were picking up the show from SyFy I got prime then and tweeted the reason at them =)

6
xiqat•

I'm going to be Amazon's bitch until this show ends.

5

There is also a Grand Tour special being aired that day as well.

4
blekkja•

Yeah, but as long as you just watch the expanse and ignore that it shouldn’t be an issue. They wouldn’t count your subscription as a vote of confidence, and hopefully those unfunny hacks will get cancelled without Clarkson having to punch someone this time.

3

1

2
redrobot5050•

Alternate thing to do: While you have access to streaming the show while you pay for prime, you still have the option to buy the season. This would allow you to keep access to the season even if you choose not to renew prime. I do this. Not because I plan on not renewing prime anytime soon, but mainly because there has to be a metric for “people who can watch the show for free but buy it anyway.” Amazon always looks at purchases as a decision making metric.

So just buy the season, if you’re willing and able.

4
fartmcmasterson•

Don’t you have enough money, Mr. Bezos?

2†
yohomatey•

How about the cast and crew who make this show? Don't they deserve to be paid? As someone who works in TV, my pension is tied to these residuals. So any time you pirate, my pension fund gets thinner. Not awesome.

-1†
fartmcmasterson•

Relax, it was a joke. I can't believe I have to explain this, but I was implying OP is actually Bezos. Sigh...

3†
KinterVonHurin•

hard to tell. Usually people say something like, "Found Mr. Bezos account."

edit: Why the fuck was this downvoted? I explained why people were downvoting the other poster? Jesus I hate reddit

-2
alejoc•

I think a lot of piracy is related to availability. For example, before Amazon picked up The Expanse, I was able to watch season 3 only on Kodi, because it did not get to Netflix until months after it came out in the USA. Same thing with The Mandalorian, Mr. Robot, For All Mankind, Colony and many more. If the entertainment industry understood that the market is much bigger than the USA and premieres should be global a lot of it would not happen.

2
yohomatey•

I recognize thar international rights are a more complex issue. All I'm saying is this show is available in a ton of different countries all on day 1. Please don't pirate it if it's available legally in your country.

Failing to get fatter doesn’t make it thinner. 🖖

0
yohomatey•

Well that's kinda false. You're not on my pension funds reports. It's in pretty serious trouble and one of the identified problems is lower than expected residuals from streaming sources. But that's cool, make yourself feel better about me not being able to retire.

1
PirateNinjaa•

Anything I’ve pirated I was never going to spend money on so your wallet stays the same either way. If I didn’t pirate it, I just wouldn’t watch it. I’m sure that is the situation for the majority of pirates.

I've had prime video for ages just by having a prime student account but never really used it until I found out about this franchise a few months ago (started with the books, didn't start watching till I finished nemesis games). It's literally the only thing on my list right now so if that doesn't tell Amazon something then idk what would in my case.

2

i think there is 0% chance this show gets canceled.... when you have jeff bezos being a fan of the show i just don't think it gets canceled. imagine being so wealthy you can just be like i'll pay for the show or at least put you in touch with the people who will on my network. i wish he was a fan of "the oa" lol

2
EricDanieros•

I wish that you had a "why you decided to sign up" field so that Amazon got an idea about what they are doing right. I subbed a month or two ago, but if it weren't for saving The Expanse I wouldn't have even considered it - I dropped my loyal Netflix sub that I had for like 8 years.

2
Pijoto•

Just resubscribed to Prime a week ago, after going without for years, haven't watched anything yet and waiting for the Expanse S4 to drop... Probably should go rewatch Season 1 to add to the Expanse "first thing a new Amazon account will do" metric, though.
