You should talk to your doctor if you have debilitating anxiety during exams

I took calc 135 in the summer, worked really hard, but failed atrociously due to anxiety during the exam. (43 on Exam 1, 6x on Exam 2.) I withdrew before taking the final. This semester I didn’t go to a single calculus lecture and just took the quizzes/exams based on what I learned in the summer but this time taking propanalol before exams and receiving extra time for the anxiety, and did ridiculously better. (95 on exam 1, 68 on exam 2, 92 on final).

It isn’t a copout excuse if anxiety really effects you and your abilities with test taking. I’m not saying if you should or shouldn’t take medication, but at the least the test taking accommodations at Rutgers can make all the difference in the world.

Thank you for saying/posting this because this is my exact situation, right down to the same med treatment. I actually was on propranolol daily for general anxiety until I had to be taken off due to a conflicting medical issue, and that’s when my test anxiety began causing me to fail for the first time. It got to the point where I couldn’t even open a book to study without anxiety taking over and debilitating me.

This semester I finally caved to the idea of taking minuscule doses of xanax to study and test-take, and though I’ve improved a ton and feel so much better about my academics I still feel guilty for needing the meds. It’s still a mental struggle to feel smart and capable, but damn did this treatment save my college career. Went from three massive anxiety attacks prior to one exam last semester to none at all this semester. So again, thank you for sharing this and making me feel a little less alone.

Im really glad you’re doing what you need to do to succeed. I feel the same way sometimes about taking any meds and using the extra time but honestly the fact that you’re doing that much better academically is all the evidence you need that you’re absolutely capable and intelligent enough for whatever classes you’re taking.

And fuck anxiety

Give me Klonopin or give me death tbh if I went to the dr for anxiety and she tried to give me a beta blocker I'd be on one.

Why should you get extra time wtf

If you have immense/diagnosed anxiety around test taking, you can get extra time because you may spend part of the allotted time freaking out or having a panic attack. Extra time lets you finish the exam although you may "waste" time panicking/dealing w anxiety.

Don't be a dick

I should get extra time because im a retard then. Like thats so stupid. Your job performance wont be adjusted because youre an anxious mess and cant get your work done.

I am currently sitting in the hospital due to an extreme panic attack where i could not breathe and so I fainted. This is normal for me. Anxiety is more than just a mental debilitating, it can be physical as well.

I have had Bipolar disorder since I was a child and I get extra time because of my paranoia comes out in OCD tendencies where I have to check every answer 5 times, check the page five times, and check the exam five times both forward and backwards.

My mental illness is not my fault, and I shouldn’t be failing exams for things outside my control. Fuck off.

You can receive accommodations for entrance tests when applying to a job.

I said your job performance so jot that down. If you have anxiety and cant perform you cant perform buddy. No different than the person who cant perform because theyre too busy fucking off or because theyre stupid.
