Help with getting into therapy.

Hi guys, so my sister is having issues with processing her thoughts, she is having a hard time right now and has concluded that she needs therapy. But its hard for her to galvanize the strength to actually start finding help as our family is completely ignorant with the world of therapy. I want to help her but I do not know the first thing about therapy. How do we find a good therapist? How can we afford it? Are there financial aids and stuff for this even? I also have to convince my parents that therapy is not a dramatic ordeal as they are also ignorant about this topic.

Are you in the USA?

Yes, Texas to be specific.

start by finding a NAMI.org support group in your area. That is likely your best option to get real advice tailored for your locality. As a bonus their website has some good information on family education programs that they conduct.

Every time I started I got discouraged, until I couldn't handle it anymore.

I googled the name of my city plus "sliding scale therapists", I also went through psychology today website (which everyone suggests, but I didn't find it helpful!). Through my google search I weeded out some stuff, and decided to start focusing on like, different practices. Like you still go to the same therapist weekly, but they are in the same office. So I looked through a few group websites, found one that sounded nice, read through everyone's profiles/credentials/if they worked on sliding scale/what their rate is. I picked the therapist who little opening bio sounded the best, not cheesy, etc. I got lucky, I love her. Her page didnt mention a sliding scale, but once she realized I couldn't afford it, she dropped her rate by 30 bucks.

Then she'll have a free consult, usually by phone, where she will establish goals and explain what is wrong.

Oh ok, so you actually find the therapist yourself and not just be given a referral for one?
