Christina Guest CHEM131

So I’m taking CHEM131 next semester and have a couple questions.
Does the class use a textbook or only slides? Does anyone have an old syllabus and slides that they would be willing to share? Also, how is Guest’s teaching and grading? Does she curve, and does she use +/-? Any tips for success? Thanks!

Had her for chem 131 this past semester. She uses some slides and has a projector so she can write live notes during class. She can move pretty fast so sometimes it can be difficult to write everything down. She uses clickers so every lecture and discussion is pretty much mandatory. She assigns online homework (mastering chemistry) that is due at the end of the week. I found the homework to be extremely useful for understanding concepts from class and they are a good grade cushion. When you buy access to the homework you can rent the online textbook which has pretty helpful videos. There are 3 midterms and a cummulative final. Warning: the practice exams are nothing like her actual exams. She made our midterms pretty difficult because she thought our class was "doing better than average". A secret to success is doing the worksheets that the discussion TA makes- sometimes those questions are pretty similar to exam questions. The final was surprisingly easy in comparison to the midterm exams. She does curve and use the +/- system. For reference I got an A- in the class with an 84% overall. Of course the curve will be different when you take the class but expect a decent curve. Overall she is a good teacher but you will need to put in a lot of work outside of class. I wish you good luck next semester!
