What comics/books do I need to read for IX to make sense?

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot, but my biggest complaint is that Palpatine returning just seems so, like, pulled out of nowhere. My friends who are into the EU say it makes total sense in the broader context of the lore. They recommended I watch Clone Wars and read the Aftermath trilogy (working my way through the first one now).

Does anyone have a reading list to have a good lore primer so I can rewatch IX?

Edit: I haven't consumed anything but the movies since Disney reset everything.

That's because it was mostly pulled out of nowhere. Wendig hinted at it in the Aftermath trilogy, but it was one of many things he threw in there not part of some grand plan. The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary does touch on a great many things though.

Resistance Reborn was touted as a must read for TROS. But it isn't; it does tie together a lot of ancillary media though which was great.

Resistance Reborn really did feel like it was building up to something in TROS, and I was happy to see so many plot threads coming together from so many different places. But it's pretty obvious that whoever Roanhorse was in contact with at Lucasfilm either knew nothing about TROS, or wanted to spoil absolutely nothing for her but didn't care enough to keep things consistent. Almost every single thing that happens in that book is contradicted by the movie, and it's so frustrating.

lmao, so much for cohesive canon without tiers

The Emperor returning makes sense in the Dark Empire/Empire's End comics/story; I have no clue if D-Canon has grounds for it to make sense. Because... Operation Cinder is a thing now. Kinda seems like an even sillier and more ridiculous of an idea now more than ever. But I don't think you'll gain all that much from it to make IX make sense.

Lmaoooo

Thats the point friend, theres nothing out there to make sense of it all because the movie makes 0 sense.

Disney better hope someone like luceno can make a darth plagueis for 9 to fix it

The thing is, JJ doesn't actually care about what the Story Group says or does, so things won't necessarily be consistent regardless.

Your friends are making some dubious reaches to try and justify what was obviously a desperate and uninspired decision by the filmmakers and the studio.

No, there is nothing that makes the Emperor’s return seem any less silly. He was hastily retconned into being the big bad for this mediocre movie.
