This article is quite notorious, and something I bring up whenever Gumbel is mentioned as an actual journalist, rather than a muckraking piece of irredeemable fermented shit surgically extracted from Satan's medial colon.
Frazier was the 12th child of a sharecropper from rural South Carolina in the 40s. He took Ali's shittalking around race very seriously (probably because it was continuous, and he called him an Uncle Tom a few times). Ali almost certainly didn't mean it with much venom - he was one of the greatest shit-talkers of all time, and would say literally anything to promote a fight - but this was seriously tone-deaf for Frazier, who hated Ali's fucking guts for years, especially after the Fight of the Century when he comprehensively beat Ali and then had to wear shit like this article immediately afterwards - Gumbel was one of the people who jumped on that narrative in the early 70s.
I think this magazine is 'Boxing Illustrated'. Not sure.

AIi called Frazier an Uncle Tom and constantly talked about him being ugly and betraying black people for not speaking out more against racism. I’ve heard people on this sub take both sides with them, but the only thing for sure is that Joe hated Ali.
