Last OT spec advice

Discussion

Hey guys, I finally found a regular raid group as a tank, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it! However, I'm still deep prot, and only have a few times where I actually have to tank something, as I'm the 3rd(and last) OT. As such, I was thinking about switching to fury/prot, to contribute more to the raid overall. I was luck enough to get an OEB the last raid, so I was thinking about doing 2H fury most of the time and switching to sword and board for fights I actually need to tank. I have a pretty good mix of pre bis and raid gear for both dps and mitigation, so I don't think gear is a problem.

Our main tank is deep prot(personal preference) and the other two OT's are fury/prot if that makes a difference.

Anyone have thoughts they would like to share?

I’m the 3rd tank for my group. I have zero points in prot. I’m full 2h fury. Everything in current content is tankable with no points in prot.

Thanks! Think BWL will be an issue?

Shouldn’t be with the OP versions of the gear we have. Vaelastrasz may be a challenge if we can’t nuke him before he gets to the 2 of us non prot offtanks

I second this opinion. The most important talent in the protection tree is Defiance for the additional threat and when I use a 3rd tank I put them on low priority targets that gives them ample time to build threat before the dps maul it.

What are you actually asking, if anything?

If anyone has any comments on my plan, like if I'm on a fools errand here, or it's fine. I don't have a great deal of raid experience so I'm just trying to crowd source some input.

It's a fine plan dude. As a 3rd OT. Prot or Fury Prot doesn't really matter.

You won't be on Skull or X, so that means the 3rd mob you're holding aggro on, isn't being dps'ed on which means you will have like 20 secs to build threat on it so being fury/prot doesn't matter. You could just be prot and save your raid mana since you'll have better mitigation.

I am in a similar spot in my guild. I raid as fury prot and gear mostly for DPS. I swap in more tank gear as needed depending on the fight and our group comp (fairly casual guild and we may run 6 healers on night and 10 the next).

I find that being fury helps tremendously on the fights where I don't tank. I personally dual wield both while tanking and while dpsing so my gear does not need to change as much to throw on a shield should I need to do so.

In current gear, I can occasionally top DPS even while running my fury prot spec though pure dps spec warriors will definitely outpace me due to improved scaling from the arms tree on their side once we get into BWL/AQ gear.

I’d stick to fury Prot same as other tanks. It’s what I run on my warrior and it does more than fine dps and more than fine tanking. What they mentioned above makes a huge difference. I’m usually so high on threat by the time they get to my add that it’s not a threat issue. Gear does help a lot though so I’d def use a sword and board til you’re sustainably geared.

If your gear supports it go fury/prot so when your not tanking your dps isn’t completely gimped or ask them if you can go full fury and just put your mitigation gear on for when your tanking. 3OT is a thankless roll but to make it more entertaining try and parse well on the fights your not tanking the boss or the add for long.

This is my roll. I am usually the 3rd or 4th tank so I run a dual wield fury spec and just wear my tank gear and switched out the weaker tank pieces for dps gear when not expecting to tank. When it is my turn to tank something I put on the rest of the tank gear.

I am usually somewhere around 20 on damage meters and could go higher with more dps gear but every now and then I need to be ready to grab a lose trash mob. I average about 250-300 dps on most fights wearing half tank gear. We clear MC in just over an hour so we aren't hurting for damage. I don't have priority on tank gear over MT but I get it before any dps. I have been 60 for a little over a month and have gotten pretty geared out. I am happy with my spot and I feel important when someone messes up and I get to save the day.

We've had Fury Warriors put on a shield and OT Domo Adds. If you're not the first or second MT, i think youre in a place of creative liberty for what spec you'd like to use. But if you get promoted to MT #1 or #2 spot, go Prot with minimal arms/fury talents for the rage preservation during stance dance and that extra crit % in fury-tree. Just my opinion from a #2 MT perspective.

MT + OT = Threat gear (either deep prot or DW)

Other tanks = mitigation gear with dps spec, fury 2h or dw doesn't matter. Easy to hold aggro when your target isn't the first to die.

I was in a similar boat. For raids, I was asked to spec fury/arms. I'm 3rd or 4th tank in our raids where I see action on fights like Majordomo, Garr, Corehounds, etc. I have not had a problem with tanking this way.

In some 5-mans though, I struggle a bit with tanking, specifically DM:N. I often have to swap between shield and OH on fights to juggle threat and blocking attacks to help the healers.

Lastly, you will be absolutely amazed how quickly you can murder things in the open world. If you're deep prot, pve'ing probably takes longer than you'd like to admit. Whereas fury/arms will let you competently kill everything you come across.

Even through BWL the “#3 tank” in a raid should be a full dps spec fury warrior (or a dps/hybrid feral or ret if your guild is into that). You don’t need 3 tanks, you really just need 1-2 tanks plus 2-3 who are capable of tanking when needed (aka any warr who isn’t lazy as fuck).

Maybe if your guild has inconsistent attendance among tanks then they’d want an extra prot-talented warr, but the best advice for that is to find a more dependable mt

The "correct" answer is whatever your raid leader wants, since you said that your goal was contributing most to the raid.

Honestly, I'm in this boat and I hate it. I love to tank. I love to tank five mans, and deep prot is the best spec for that, IMO. The level of control that you have with concussive blow and tactical mastery is huge.

But for my spot in raids, I go fury/prot. I could probably go full DPS spec, but that's not how I want to play at all.
