« On l'a appelé. » or « On lui a appelé. » ? Different sources seem to say different things.
Je veux dire simplement « we called him (on the telephone) ».
Je lisais Lawless French (ici, en bas de la page) et elle écrit que le verbe « appeler » prend un complément d'objet indirect, donc lui. Les exemples Collins French en revanche n'utilisent pas lui ; ils utilisent le. Qui a raison ?

On l'a appelé, definitely !
J'ai appellé Pierre ce matin
In no way :
J'ai appelé à Pierre which is impossible.
Merci beaucoup ! :)

A special and interesting construction.
Good idea to mention it.
Here I am not sure we have an ordinary indirect complement of the verb, rather perhaps some kind of special "complément circonstanciel".
Note that for me a sentence as:
On a appelé un taxi à Pierre
is somewhat awkward. The correct form being rather to my ear:
on a appelé un taxi POUR Pierre
Other examples:
Elle lui a cassé la planche sur le crâne
?? Elle a cassé la planche sur le crâne à Pierre (dubious sentence)
That is there exist some cases where lui/leur is possible but a full à + noun phrase is dubious.
(j'ai fait appel à Pierre is ok but je lui ai fait appel is not)
