Creating Maps & Missions

I've been poking around a bit and I was wondering if anyone has made a custom mission or map yet. I'd really like to make some missions with a variety of objectives with the map tiles. Does anyone know if the map tiles can be effectively placed? I have to assume it's like any level editor, but you're dropping in the terrain and placing trigger volumes and such.

Any suggestions or tips regarding this?

I almost made a post about this, actually. Was going to call it a “meta mod” where someone uses the mod editor to make a map editor that the average non hardcore modded could use. Basic functionality like placing tiles, mechs and prefabs, triggers, etc.

Would be a handy tool to create content as the random generated stuff gets stale.

Well, in theory, that's how every editor works. If you're using a game editor and you are able to build a map, then you can place triggers, buildings, everything. That's literally the point of Unreal's editor.

These tiles come from a library of tiles, because generating unique tiles just clearly isn't a thing. I could imagine the tiles have fixed terrain height map, but then trees and some structures are placed procedurally.

The thing that I'm trying to figure out is how campaign missions are made, rather than the random missions. I can tell there are tiles being put together, but I can't figure out if those tiles are placed manually for the campaign missions or if a map is generated.

Since the campaign missions have a bit more bespoke game events, then I have to assume the those assets are around and placeable, but I haven't been able to locate them. If I have to custom build a map without the tiles, I could do that, but it seems like that's not necessary.

I'm no unreal expert, so I'm not sure.

Yeah I think we both have the same endgame in mind: being able to create engaging and interesting scenarios. That’s what I want out of mech 5; I miss the strategy, endurance, planning, and story of mech 2-4
