IUD and cups

For those that have an IUD:

  1. How long until you used your cup again? I know it’s not recommended to use it right after insertion but idk when it’ll be safe to do so again.

  2. What’s your removal technique? Pre-IUD I did this thing where I’d bear down and sort of “birth” my cup before breaking the seal. I know you’re supposed to break the seal first when you have an IUD but I’ve never been able to break the seal without bringing my cup way down first. I’m wondering if this is ok to do—I mean, IUDs don’t get expelled when you poop...right???

I just really want to be able to use my cup again. I’m stuck with pads for now and I hate them.

I keep reading the cautionary tales.

But what I do, when I'm at home at least, is I squat down in front of the toilet and I reach in for it. I do not have much flow because of the IUD so I pinch the base of it, and try to break the seal before pulling it down and out.

I've had my IUD for over a year before I started using the cup. However, I have been feeling the strings a whole lot more lately. I wonder if it is because I am more in contact with my body, or is it because I've been pulling the IUD down. It is not easy to get a Gyno appointment where I'm at, and my GPs don't have access to ultrasound machines. I'll keep a feel on the strings, in case they do shift any more.

I started using mine again maybe a month or two after insertion.

And just try and break the suction as soon as you can. You can push it down a little if needed, but try and break the suction as high up as possible.

I’ve never had any problems, but I do have a friend who had her iud come out because she didn’t break the seal properly...

What IUD did your friend have that she was able to pull it out? and how long had she had it when this happened?

She had a diva cup. And it just came out because she was rushed (heading into an important exam) and didn’t break the suction at all.

I also have a diva and have never had any problems. But I always make sure to break the seal

I have a mirena and my gyne let me use it 1 week after I had it put in. Never had any problems with the suction of the the cup. The only thing I've had to be careful of is making sure I don't grab the strings when I take it out. It's very hard to pull out the iud from suction alone. I wouldn't worry about it.

  1. I waited the rest of the cycle and the next one. (I used organic cotton pads and they weren't half bad, I barely felt them!)

  2. This technique gets me quite messy, but I've never had a problem with the suction OR getting the strings pinched. I reach in with one finger, hook it over the rim, open the cup by pulling the rim towards the bottom (thus breaking the seal), and use my finger to pull the cup out. I am not sure if that makes any sense to you...
