Best magic modpacks?

Question

So I've been playing on ftb infinity, and when my saves got corrupted I felt like switching it up.

would you know of any complete magic-oriented modpack, that are still supported to this day? it would be nice if it had an expert mode as well

There aren't many for 1.12.2, and the ones I'm aware of haven't been updated for a while. I'm not aware of any magic only expert packs. Doesn't help that they're incredibly hard to search for on curse since having 1 magic mod in your pack qualifies you for magic in curseforge's search option.

The only ones I'm aware of are Mystical Skies and All the Magic, but they havent been updated for a while. If you end up finding one, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Typically, when searching for magic packs, what I do is either:

  1. Use the search bar and search with terms associated with magic, like "mag" (for "Magic" or "Mage"), "Arcane", or "Mystic".
  2. Take mods that lend themselves to magic packs, like Roots or Arcane Archives (I used Ice and Fire), and search for modpacks including them by going to Relations>Dependencies. I wouldn't recommend doing this with popular mods like Astral Sorcery, Botania, Blood Magic, or Thaumcraft.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to specifically search out magic expert packs, though I have found one, Arcane Anarchy.

If you'd like, I can share some of the packs I've found.

I would like to know what packs you have found if you dont mind.

Bear in mind that 100% magic modpacks (i.e no tech mods whatsoever) almost don't exist; most here will usually contain something like IE or TiC.

Aside from the aforementioned Arcane Anarchy:

Magiculture 2

Magical Progression

Quest for Magic (Is an expert pack, has Better With Mods)

Paths of Magic 3

Mystical Village 2

Thaumcraftian Adventures 2 Despite the name, has more than just Thaumcraft, i.e blood magic, botania, astral sorcery... I'm a bit weary of this one because of abyssalcraft.

Era of Magic 2 Despite the name is largely Thaumcraft focused, with AS being the only other major magic mod

Kinetic: Novus I think this might be the biggest of the ones I've listed here, but it also has the most tech mods; I think it has IE, TiC, the Thermal series, and Extreme Reactors at the very least. I haven't taken an in-depth look at the mod list yet.

Thanks, ill take alook at these. TiC is tinkers construct yea? If so i dont consider that a tech mod more medieval except for some of the addon stuff. IE low tech enough that it fits fairly well and if i want i can ignore the powered stuff past wind/watermill and still get the cool asthetics from it.

FTB Infinity is a 1.7 pack, right? So I assume you're okay with playing on 1.7.

There was an older pack, FTB Mage Quest, which was decent and had quest lines for four major magic mods (Thaumcraft, Botania, Witchery, and Blood Magic). However, it stopped being updated pretty quickly and doesn't have recent versions of the 1.7 editions of those mods.

There's also a pack called Simply Magic, which was designed as a tutorial-style introduction to all the major 1.7 magic mods. That mostly means it has a questbook for every mod, otherwise there's not too many changes which means you can play that pack if you just want to play with magic mods and have a good time. This pack was also kept more updated, which means it has recent versions of major mods and also has mods like Ars Magica which only became stable late in the 1.7 development cycle and didn't make their way into as many packs.

Personally, my recommendation is to boot up Nuts & Bolts for 1.7, which is a massive kitchen sink pack with a lot of tweaking, but it includes all the major 1.7 magic mods including Chromaticraft which is and always will be 1.7-exclusive. You can ignore the tech mods if you want to, of course, and the pack at least tries to balance things out so that tech doesn't dominate magic as it often does. The amount of tweaking also gives it a little bit of an expert feel although I wouldn't call it an expert pack like IE:E or E2:E.

If you're more concerned about an "expert" feel, Regrowth is a 1.7 pack which uses Botania, Witchery, Thaumcraft, and Magical Crops as core mods in its progression (along with Mekanism for tech, but that's a late-game thing). So not as extensive in terms of the modlist, but very much magic-oriented in terms of progression.

I've never heard of Chromaticraft, but damn that looks stunning. I'll definitely give it a try.

I'll try with Simply magic, but maybe I should just stick with kitchen sink packs

You can also try dropping Chromaticraft in the Simply Magic pack, and it should work fine without too much trouble (you might need to turn up the frequency of its biomes in the configs, that should be all unless you get an ID conflict of some sort). Then you can just play with all the things and be happy about it.

Arcane Anarchy is what you're looking for. It's got a couple of tech mods (Extra Utilities 2, Embers) but is otherwise a magic expert pack.

I think Magiculture 2 also has a quest book, though I don't know about an expert mode. There's also a Magiculture 1 if you'd prefer 1.7.10, though it has no quest book.

You could also try Magical Progression.

With the obvious exception of Magiculture 1, these are all 1.12.2.

It's a 1.7.10 pack but hubris is pretty good for all magic. Regrowth isn't all magic but it definitely feels like it in the beginning if you want to check that out also. I don't know of anything for newer editions of minecraft.

I usually play with the electroblob's wizardry. It's a pretty simple mod, but it adds lots of spells and some dungeons. I'm really enjoying it

Magiculture is a magic based pack. Havent played it, but had a brief look and it seemed to be pretty decent.

Did you settle in on a favorite? Just found this thread while looking for suggestions of my own :). I'm installilng several of the ones mentioned here to try out - I'm enjoying RW and PO3 but they aren't scratching that magical adventure itch that I'm looking for.
