Visiting Japan next month. Not gonna lie, I would have checked this place out just for the hilarity. it's going to shut down before I get there, though

I just visited over new year's. Honestly, I recommend staying away from this kind of stuff.
It might be funny at a distance, but IRL it tends to be way creepier than you'd think.
Plus there's so much other awesome stuff to check out. If you're in Tokyo make sure to check out teamLab Planets near Shijo-mae Station, it's an incredible immersive art experience.

There's a big difference between a fictional character/scenario and seeing it IRL, and hearing about it at a distance is really different than having it right in front of you.
Eg seeing the poor girls in impractical maid outfits having to fake a high pitch voice just made me feel bad for them. It's not like being around cosplayers because for these people it's a job and they can't just ignore the creeps.
It's also kind of a cheesy cash grab, with inflated prices - and if you're in Japan, you've got tons of better and cheaper options for food.
Even stuff like the Square Enix Cafe kind of disappointed me. It wasn't creepy at all, but stuff was all really overpriced because they knew they were catering to a niche fanbase.
The Pokemon Center stores on the other hand were pretty sweet, reasonable prices and lots of excited people of all ages.

I visited Akihabara with a Japanese friend and everything was just so weird and off-putting. If you have an ounce of social awareness you'll realize that anime culture in general is pretty gross.

Especially since food is normally pretty cheap in Japan and there's tons of great small restaurants all over the place.
