@people dashing across the university drive crosswalk before the bridge

To those people on bikes and skateboards who come out of nowhere and dash across the crosswalk without looking beforehand: you’re a dick

Edit: applies more to crosswalks on stop signs than traffic lights

And sad thing is even if it their fault they got hit, I am still held responsible if I'm a driver.

Not necessarily true. I’m both a cyclist and motorist in Tempe. Back in 2017, or maybe 2018 (time blurs in school) I was driving south on Mill just past CVS but before the motel and around 8 PM. I prepared to make a right turn onto 9th St but had to stop due to a cyclist heading south on the side walk who had the right-of-way.

As she was finishing riding across the street she made a sharp left to travel across Mill WITHOUT looking behind her or using any hand signals.

Seeing this, my brain thought, “that’s an excellent way to get hit.” And of course as I finished this thought in the left of my vision I saw her become illuminated by headlights a turned in time to see a grey Mustang not stop in time, hitting her bike, her falling onto the hood, her bike being pushed a foot or two as the car finished coming to a stop, and then her crawling off the hood.

The driver, cyclist, other witnesses, and myself collected in the parking lot of the motel. About 10-15 minutes later EMS arrived as she was not showing signs of severe injury and 20 minutes Tempe PD arrived. EMS found no signs of injury requiring her a visit to the hospital. After interviewing everyone who had the same story, the driver was in the clear and the police issued a citation to the cyclist for failing to follow the rules of the road, specifically failing to yield. She had an Israeli passport and was a student at ASU.

There was also some drama of another cyclist who was on the east side of Mill heading north who tried to claim he was also hit by the car in the crosswalk. He was a real price of shit, saying racist shit to the Hispanic driver, going on about his rights as an American, and being confrontational with the other witnesses before emergency services arrived. He was yelling at EMS for taking their time gathering the equipment cases and walking over to the scene (which is how responders are trained because slow is fast and fast creates mistakes which can kill).

He refused to be screened by EMS and insisted on being taken to the hospital. He gave false information to the police for the report and also refused their suggestion to be checked out by EMS. Again he was whining about his rights as a victim and all the eyewitness accounts had only the one cyclist in the street.

Since the scammer refused to leave, the police asked the motel manager if he was welcomed on their property and he was not. He refused to leave and shouted “my back!” and slumped his lower back over a parking curb and had his head resting on the curb of a sidewalk. Not a position one would stay in with an injured back.

At this point they asked the manager if she would be willing to press trespassing charges and she said yes. They gave him about three more warnings to leave before arresting him. He resisted a little during the hand cuffing and whined about “his rights,” but sadly no taser was needed. Tempe PD was very patient with him and this was one of my positive experiences with them.

The whole reason I witnessed this was because I had gone through the drive-thru at Chic-Fil-A, so by the time everything had finished and I could leave my waffle fries were soggy and my milk shake was melted. :_(

Edit:

Also, the only time I have been hit as a cyclist was by another cyclist who failed to yield AND was going against traffic.

DON’T BE A BIKE SALMON.

America gotta fix driving laws tbh

I almost got run over today next to the Starbucks on Rural. Green crosswalk sign and everything, was about an inch from punching their window in because they were going pretty slow on a turn and I had to jump back to avoid being taken out.

So yeah, don't jay walk, but if you're driving don't be a fucking ass clown

29
OscarM96•

I'm going to assume there were 6000 other people at that crosswalk putting traffic at a standstill because a right turn can't be made, because that shit happens all the time with pedestrians literally walking at 0.2mph

7
Running_Is_LifeEconomics•

No, I was the only person in the crosswalk

1
slimoracle•

Yea these drivers need to be more careful. I almost got run over by MU on a crosswalk. The car missed me by a few inches

McAllister and Apache. Those busses don’t stop if the crosswalk light is green. If there’s people, they’ll try to make it through.

2
Running_Is_LifeEconomics•

Lol yeah they'll cut through in front of you and just assume you'll stop walking

Oof can’t imagine if she actually did get hit. She looks like she was in a hurry, looking down at something trying to multitask.

Just apply it to the forehead!

I saw someone jaywalk across university on the corner of university and forest and he ended up standing still in the middle of the road because cars were coming on both sides. Blows my mind how people are so impatient they’re willing to risk getting killed just to save a minute or two of time :/

23
RandomNinja11OPCyberSecurity '22•

This girl saved no time. I got to the other side before her cuz the light turned green really soon after

Broski... it’s 2020 and you still gonna run around using the an ableist word like it’s 1990? Go get a vocabulary and be articulate instead of resorting to low hanging prepackaged ableist insults.

-2†
gr8valuequality•

idk why everyone is downvoting this person. they’re right, there’s a million different words u could have used instead of the r one.

20
lostspyder•

Owning teh libs by talking like a child in college.

12
fern_the_redditorMechanicalEngineering '21•

Yeah I'm not trying to "own teh libs" (wtf)? That word has been used outside of the context of mental disorders for so long that it's been reduced to a just a common insult. Would you have said anything if I used the word "idiot" or "moron" instead? I don't think so, despite the fact that both words were similarly used to describe people with mental handicaps in the past.

0†
carlyc999Criminology ‘23•

My guess is because of how they didn’t just say the word was rude but started calling it ableist and stuff

2
Bosilaify•

But there are zero words he wanted to use more. Who cares what words we use. We live in America, where free speech is protected.

1†
Queen-of-Leon•

Free speech means freedom to criticize, too 🤷‍♀️

6
ElderScrollsOnMineAerospace•

We're still tidying up how we deal with LGBTQ and race. Able-ist issues are so 2024

1
bobluvsbananas•

Because people at ASU rightfully hate SJWs and how words trigger them.

-17
lostspyder•

Does it... does it “trigger” you...?

14

Just stop, we live in a country where he can say whatever the fuck he wants you ableist retard.

I jaywalk all the time across University. Just gotta wait for both the lights at college Ave and at manzy to go red and make sure no cars are coming

I could understand if this was a different signal, but if it's the one on Apache I'm jaywalking no matter what. Fuck that signal

Yeah I know a woman died cause the self driving uber car hit her. Best to not take any chances especially since driving can be chaotic around college campuses.
