Fuck activision

Blizzard is dead.

It's sad. Blizzard used to be such a customer-centric company. I ultimately blame Activision and Kotick their CEO for these scummy shitbag moves.

I've been playing Blizzard games since floppy drives, most importantly WoW since beta. I reference this because at launch, Blizzard was giving away a ton of free days due to server issues, etc. Their CS was amazing. Now you're just expected to deal with it. Bad server issues? Tough shit. Submit a ticket? They reply with a canned response. As Terenas said, "No king rules forever".

Good game studios have a natural lifecycle. Start out as ambitious newbies with a fun idea that tech has just caught up to. Release something usually buggy, but magnificent. Become experienced pros who've honed the idea. Release the perfect version of that idea. Eventually the success attracts management sorts who want them to repeat on that idea forever, because money.

Really impressive companies put that off by having a second idea.

Blizzard beat the spread by repeating that process 3 times -- Warcraft+Starctaft, Diablo, and WoW. But it gets harder to be original every time, as the successes build up.

I keep hearing "fuck Activision" and blaming Activision, etc.

I never understood why the blame got placed on Activision or Kotick, or Vivendi. In all of those corporate mergers and acquisitions, Blizzard flatout refused to be acquired or change hands without the stipulation that Blizzard retain complete autonomy and its own executives. In fact, if I remember correctly, this stipulation delayed the deal for a few months as Activision was uneasy about the idea. This was never written out or otherwise squashed, and to this day Kotick has nearly no control over what Blizzard does.

In fact, the only thing Activision has any control over at all is publishing, which doesn't ultimately matter as Blizzard self-publishes their titles and has since the merger. I'm actually kind of curious if this was an AB move or a Blizzard Entertainment move.

I'd love to agree with you, but over the last 10 years I've heard this so many times that I am lead to believe that Blizzard and Activision are some weird immortal zombies that just refuse to die, but don't actually do anything to stay alive.

Lots of companies manage to keep going just off momentum. Heck, Sears is still technically ticking along. You can (kinda) find Radio Shacks, apparently. And there’s still one last Blockbuster Video in Bend, Oregon.

Big brand names tend to linger like wet farts.

13
Put_It_All_On_Blck•

Their games have die hard fan bases, and they continue to milk the same IP's (especially blizzard), and its like starwars level for stuff like warcraft based games, where parents who grew up with it are shoving it down their childrens throats until they like it too.

RTukka•

They're not going to die in the sense that Blizzard will utterly cease to exist as a company or brand name. What is dying (or rather, is being killed) is the culture and mindset that made the company what it was.

Also, I'd say it's only fairly recently that Blizzard has really taken a turn.

obiwansotti•

I don't actually think they will go away anytime soon. They have enough inertia to be around for a very long time. But their soul is gone, and I doubt they will ever be the company they were in the late 90s early 00s when everything they touched was gold.

And nothing of value was lost.

but I like Overwatch :(

I like starcraft.

You can run starcraft on a potato, you don't need a streaming service.

Zok2000•

Starchcraft

DarkWorld25•

Tell that to my laptop

2
cvdvds•

Enough to want to play it on a device with comparatively high latency and very likely worse input options?

This is because AB recently signed a large contract with Google. I would not be surprised if these games show up on Stadia (gasp) in the near future.

Google screwed up Stadia's launch big time, but maybe if they fix the biggest issues and relaunch Blizzard games, they can get some customers to come back.

44
CalgaryXTC•

what went wrong with stadia?

6
dbxp•
  1. Lack of launch titles
  2. You had to buy the game at full price upfront and if google cancels the project you#ll lose everything

so if atvi games go to stadia, they will have some launch titles

0
dbxp•

They're not launch titles if they're released after launch

2

Try to imagine the game version of the Nexus Q.

17
CalgaryXTC•

no idea what the nexus Q is.. haha. but stadia sounds like a disaster.

9
Seda314•

no idea what the nexus Q is

Exactly.

Media player which they effectively cancelled before it launched changing their market orientation and superceding it with chromecast. Chromecast is pretty succesfull as far as I know.

Saying it was a disaster is imo very misleading for these reasons.

2

games were too expensive for just streaming them

9
CalgaryXTC•

wait.. you have to buy the game, and you don't even own it?

9

ye and nvidia just gives you games to play and all you have to do is pay like five bucks a month.

3
HavocInferno•

Wait till you hear about the ownership models of all the big game platforms.

-2
Jeep-Eep•

Literally everything short of engaging nVidia for a semicustom GPU solution.

2
Dithyrab•

it was shit from the begining?

2
Shantorian14•

crazy lag on a “no lag system”, lack of titles, having to pay for titles and then not receiving the title or a refund if they fell through, etc

2
hisroyalnastiness•

They tried to stream video games lol

1
kieroutunut•

Which is a good idea.

Stadia really blew it with their business model. Nvidia took a novel approach by allowing you to play games you already bought. The other option is a flat subscription fee that gives you access to a full library. With Stadia you pay a subscription that gives you higher resolution but also a limited number of games, but also you have to buy individual game licenses. At this point with the quality of internet access the average person has I think up-selling people on 4k streaming isn't a money maker. People will be more than happy to stream at 1080p if they can get decent latency and pay a subscription for a big library of games, especially since you're opening up small screens like phones and tablets where higher resolution isn't going to make a huge difference.

At this point the selling point for game streaming is the convenience of it. Play high quality (aka non-mobile gacha crap) games anywhere. Google talked about how having server hardware that the average person doesn't have at home will open things up for developers, but we aren't there yet. Devs aren't going to specifically target super high-end hardware like that when so many people are still playing on consoles and PCs at home.

Fuck blizzard and all of their soulless games. Who cares

26
melonguy1789•

Google Stadia + Diablo Immortal or Warcraft 3 Reforged = end game combo /s

5
Modazull•

If you want to stream your games be prepared to have monthly subscriptions for different streaming services. This sucks. Enough with this exclusive bullshit. If they really think that people will have multiple streaming services so they can play all games they own (or play all games they want to play but have to purchase like with stadia) they are dead wrong.

I cant put it into words how much I hate this exclusive pukeshow.
