How hard is DMC3 for your first story run compared to Bayonetta?

Question

DMC3 for Switch will be my first game (I watched an LP of 1 because they're sold separately and wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it with how dated it is. Might come back to it later).

I kinda suck at Bayonetta but I thought it was very accessible and easy to just survive and see the story. The checkpoints are so frequent that it's easy to practice one part until you can do it, and now I can get through normal/hard chapters with no deaths and minimal item use, especially the second game.

I was just wondering what DMC3 is like in comparison since it's slightly older. Will dying mean having to repeat long sections at any point? Ideally I'd want to play on normal (hard is probably too hard for a beginner?) and eat up bad rankings but not be frustrated.

DMC3 does have some rough checkpoints, but I don't think they become a huge problem until you get to the harder difficulties like Dante Must Die. Most of the time if you ever get stuck, it'll be on the boss fights (which always have a checkpoint right before the fight)

Another important thing regarding checkpoints, is the Gold/Yellow modes. At the start of the game, if you pick Gold mode, you will receive Gold Orbs which you can use to revive yourself on the spot whenever you die. On Yellow mode, you receive Yellow Orbs which are basically a consumable item you use every time you die and reload from a checkpoint, and when you run out of yellow orbs, you have to start the level over (this is how DMC1 and the original DMC3 release worked). I would recommend playing on Gold mode

i found bayonetta to be much harder. bayonetta is basically dodge perfectly or you're fucked and the first time round it takes a while to learn enemy patterns and being able to consistently react to their attacks. DMC3 is more lenient as tight dodge windows have nowhere as much influence on your success as in bayonetta. bayonetta is like DMC but you have to consistently royal guard/table hopper to stay afloat.

i found dodge offset to be a bit tricky at first but it burnt into my muscle memory very quickly. like second nature. having to consistently hit witch time on first runs is the hard part.

So would you say DMC is a bit more offense than defense?

Of course. DMC is all about combos with no need to do tight dodges or blocks.

That's basically it. DMC is much more offensively-oriented (pretty much all-out attack at its best). Bayonetta focuses more on dodging.

Styles in the game will help you get more accustomed to that. In DMC3 there are 4 base styles: Swordmaster, Gunslinger, Trickster, Royal guard. The first two are offense based with the last two being defense. So your playstyle can be drastically different to someone who focuses entirely on combos.

The special edition won’t be too rough my first time was on vanilla which has hard mode as the default difficulty. The learning curve should be easier with style switching just learn them and how they can help in multiple scenarios. The game judges you on switching combos and techniques so have fun with your arsenal and you’ll do good. Some bosses are tricky the first time but just keep using the tools at your disposal and you’ll eventually be able to figure out a way to defeat them. The game really is trial and error with some bosses sometimes you’re tempted to take a risk or play it safe. Some enemies have weird gimmicks so go to the enemy files to find out their gimmicks if regular attacks are ineffective. It can be challenging at times but it’s a game where once you master the combat you’ll feel that it’s rewarding to have the tricks up your sleeve.

DMC is definitely all about offense, until you get to DMC5 but still it's all about SSSTYLE!

On Hard and up they start putting up a fight. On Very hard and especially DMD they’re ruthless.
