r/minecraft, I've never played on a server before, what's it like?

So, I haven't played minecraft since before the beta, and was never interested in the server experience because it wasn't survivor multiplayer, it was just creative. What's the experience like? How do I find a good server? Is the main reddit server a good place to start? Thanks a lot!

I read the title in the voice of the Monty Python "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" voices.

man1: Have you every been with a.... lady?

man2: Well, yes.

man1: what's it like?

A nod's a good as a wink to a blind bat, eh?

If you enjoy single player, but want to try multiplayer, I would suggest the Reddit PVE (Player-Vs-Environment) server when it's open for public (which is open to the public now). (Or Please donate and get in now thanked by the admins.)

The Reddit PVE server is basically single player with lockable chests, nerfed creepers (they damage you, but not blocks), and the ability to create a /home warp. It's not Player-Vs-Player (PVP), meaning you don't need to watch your back 24/7. Instead you can basically play in a single-player style, but with other people on the server with you to chat with, answer/ask questions, banter with, admire player constructions, etc.

The map is simply amazing to play on. The resources have been "plumped" a little bit so that you're not grinding away forever to get basic needs.

To give you an idea of what the map looks like, here are a few pictures of my house on the Reddit PVE server.

EDIT: Just found out PVE is now open to the public.

Thanks! I just donated with the link you attached (saved my receipt to show), how do I get into the server?

E-mail [email protected] with the subject being your Minecraft username. They'll get you on the whitelist for the server. Once they respond, connect to p.nerd.nu in Minecraft. (I got a response in 2.5 hours.)

I was just informed by one of the admins on IRC that the PVE server is actually open to public now, not just early access. (That was news to me.) In light of that new info, thank you very much for the donation.

From the donation site:

E-mail [email protected] after donating with the subject being your Minecraft username.

After trying that, post back to let us know if you got in.

Starting on a large server like the reddit one can be a bit overwhelming, I would recommend starting a small one with some friends or finding a smaller server on the main list.

But it definitely beats the singleplayer mode, the only time I ever do singleplayer minecraft anymore is during internet downtime and server lagspikes.

I played single player extensively, started playing survival multiplayer, and never looked back.

It's a great time to start playing on s.nerd.nu (The reddit survival server) because the map was just reset yesterday and everyone's got a clean slate

What's the difference between p.nerd.nu and s.nerd.nu?

s = survival = player vrs player. p = pve = player vrs enviornment

Ah, I'd like to try PvP, but I feel like I'd be crushed for quite a while before I get the hang of it. Unless there are teams/clans?

Don't forget about creative (c.nerd.nu), especially if you're new!

I went on there, started chopping down my first tree, and some douchebag with an iron sword and armor kills me.

I have not returned.

p.nerd.nu is the Player versus Environment server

s.nerd.nu is the Survival server, which right now is just PVP with a PVE spawn area. In the future there may be PVE Cities where PVP will be disabled

  1. Find friends who play
  2. host your own server
  3. never see sunlight again
