Coronavirus [tw: death]

medical woes 💉

The first death in Washington state happened at the hospital down the street, the hospital where my good friend just had her baby, the hospital that I just took my 13 month old to because he had a 105 degree fever (thanks, Roseola).

I am so scared to leave the house now. I don't want to take Mini matho to school. I don't want to go to the drug store to pick up my meds. I'm not entirely sure that panic is the wrong response. We have food for two weeks stored, but we couldn't get enough water. I don't know what to do other than wash my hands and pray. There are no atheists in foxholes has never been truer. I am so scared that the systems which could help are losing funding and the administration is disseminating incorrect information.

I don't know if it will be okay, but I would really appreciate people telling me it will be.

I think we just have to be very vigilant—after all, we’re more likely to get the flu than this virus. Wash your hands frequently... including when you get home from being out in public. And be mindful of NOT touching your face, mouth, eyes, etc.

Logic can’t win over emotions.

This death happened literally too close to home. Totally a normal reaction for you! What you’re experiencing is 100% valid.

The reality is, most people who catch it only exhibit mild symptoms, nothing different than an annoying cold. From what I’ve read, young kids aren’t catching it as readily as adults, and the people who pass away from it typically have a co-infection such as flu.

Of course, none of that matters right now. You got this x

I'm freaking out a little too. I read The Stand at a too young age and I have a small child with asthma. But from what I've been reading, we have a couple of things going for us: it's not airborne, you actually have to come into contact with infected droplets. And hand washing is VERY effective at killing the virus because of the fatty layer surrounding it. Wash your hands A LOT (warm water, soap, lots of friction, sing "Happy Birthday" twice), get your kids and partner and anyone who comes over to wash their hands when they come in to your house. Be pretty strict about staying away from sick people. If your mom wants to come over but mentions she has a cough, NOPE. If your kid's friend had a fever yesterday, NOPE.

It's probably going to be okay. ::hugs::

it appears that the virus is very mild in children and people under 40. you are probably are at no more risk than you are from the seasonal flu. however, your kids could pick it up and then transmit it to other people, even if they don't seem sick, which could prove very dangerous for anyone over 60 or who has health problems.

A new exposure of at 288 people at a long term care facility was just announced. Epidemiologically speaking, it's no longer if we get it, but when.

this is true. I just keep telling myself that my kids will almost certainly be OK, and I will probably be OK, and my elderly relatives better stay the hell home and not go anywhere and just let me drop off groceries.

So, the death rate for COVID 19 is strongly linked with age. No one under 10 has died of this disease. In fact, under 50 your risk pretty low compared to the overall stats.

I was worrying about my kids and daycare and all that, but now I’m just worrying about my grandparents in Northern California. I find that accurate information usually helps when I’m heading towards anxiety.

Here’s a link to my source.

My new concern is that a woman in Japan who had recovered from the Covid-19 has contracted it again, maybe.

The news is not my friend right now.

this is a pretty good article on the virus.

And anyone testing positive after recovering is testing positive from anal swabs, this is because your GI tract sheds the virus longer due to it having a different immune system. You ‘recover’ from/clear the virus at different rates in different systems in the body, but as of now there are no indications the virus goes dormant and then re-emerges to re-infect. Once you recover you should have immunity against that particular virus strain.

In most people hand washing and good hygiene will prevent you from contracting the virus, and if you’re under 40 and in good health you’re unlikely to suffer severe consequences from this virus.

Take the same precautions you would for the flu and if you develop symptoms of a fever, coughing/sneezing/, trouble breathing call your local hospital/er to let them know before coming in. And wear a mask if one is available - this helps prevent you spreading the droplets to others.

I know it’s scary, but we have good things going for us here - better air quality, better hygiene, and while a broken and expensive medical system - it will provide excellent and top level care. Hospitals are gearing up and know how to best prevent spread from patient to patient.

Try and breathe, trust your instincts, be safe and cautious, but don’t let this control your life. ❤️

Thank you. I'm working on it.

Fellow Seattlite here. 80% of those with the virus are able to recover at home. The person that passed at Evergreen had a compromised immune system. Yes, it's scary, but I dont think it's worth panicking over.

I'm trying. It doesn't seem to be effecting children as much as it is older adults. I am worried about my in-laws and parents now. Ugh. I just need more information. The administrations it's-a-hoax response is just making it all worse, because now almost half the country thinks it's no big deal.

This is a totally normal reaction.

Everyone knows it’s a huge concern right now. and all the doctors and nurses are being hyper vigilant. Plus kids are much less likely to get it or show symptoms, and if they do it’s much less severe. There’s promising treatments coming out of Singapore and other countries.

We aren’t handling this as proactively as we could, as a country, but there are lots of smart people working on it and we have lots of countries who have gone first to learn from.

Do you know the age of the person ? And did they release their health state? Like do they have an autoimmune deficiency? I'm genuinely curious because no where will release this type of info for fear mongering.

Apparently they were 50+ with some some sort of health issue according to trumps “briefing”. But that doesn’t necessarily make me feel better.

They were 50. And now there have been at least 250 exposures at a long term care center next to the hospital.

I would be terrified too. My city just had a group of people come back who went on vacation to an area that had an outbreak. They found out in between their flights there and didnt turn around! The good news is, as long as you practice basic hygiene you should be fine. Kids under 10 rarely get it and it really only has a big chance of being fatal to anyone over the age of 50 with previous health issues.

Wash your hands frequently and if you have a cold wear a mask to help prevent spreading germs. That's where masks are useful, in keeping germs to yourself and what not. This is something I struggle with bc I don't always remember to cough into my elbow or shoulder when I have a cold and yeah. It's something I want to work on. It's gonna be mostly, if not completely okay.
