but how is that even possible for lead acid batteries?
It got hot as hell. I found it because I was trying to find the source of the burnt plastic smell. The plastic casing on the battery pack casing was so hot I couldn't hold it.
Under some circumstances, they can break down the water inside to produce hydrogen gas.
But usually those have a vent
very common on old flat batteries. chemical reaction I think makes a crap ton of dendrites which is what causes them to expand.
how spicy are lead batteries?
Very. Exposing them to air is no big deal (old car batteries used to be filled with distilled water, exposing the electrolyte to the air) but if the battery explodes, it gets everywhere and will burn everything.
That's a Spicy brick
That's a nice H₂ 8 pack it's got there
My previous company had a ups come in for battery change because the engineer onsite couldn't do the change. Had to remove the casing and pry the internal cage to free both spicy packages.
I had to replace the batteries in an old APC BR24BP battery expansion unit. "Not user replaceable" my ass.
I know this is relatively old but I just had to replace 8 cartridges (64 batteries) on APC UPS and boy oh boy was that fun. Quite a few spicy boys. Little bit of acid leakage, had to replace some wires. Good time.
